Arsenal kept their slim Women's Super League title hopes alive with a commanding 4-0 win over Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.
A goal each from Caitlin Foord and Mariona Caldentey alongside two own goals from Jasmine Matthews sealed a resounding win for The Gunners, who moved within five points of Chelsea.
It was an ideal response to a sobering 2-0 defeat against Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.
Foord broke the deadlock two minutes shy of the half-hour mark when she turned home from deep inside the box, as Liverpool failed to deal with a corner.
An uphill challenge for Amber Whiteley's side became even greater less than two minutes later when Matthews turned Kim Little's cutback into her own net.
There was still time for Renee Slegers’ team to add a third before half-time, as Caldentey unleashed a superb left-footed strike past Rachael Laws.
The scoring was completed in the 69th minute when Matthews turned the ball into her own net for a second time, this time from Beth Mead's cross.
Arsenal had several more opportunities to make the scoreline even more emphatic, as Frida Maanum struck the woodwork twice, alongside further chances for Leah Williamson and Alessia Russo.
The Gunners will now be keeping a watchful eye on Manchester City’s WSL clash against Chelsea at the Joie Stadium on Sunday, hoping that the hosts can do them a favour.
Foord told Sky Sports after the match: "It has been a heavy week but off the back of a loss we had a point to prove. We were really looking forward to this game and putting on a show.
"As a front four we want to be fluid and make it difficult for defenders. We knew if we started fast we could make them work. We knew if we made them run, they were not used to that. We wanted to break them down, and we did that early."
Everton ease past Palace
------------------------
Everton eased past Crystal Palace with a 3-0 victory at Walton Hall Park, as the visitors missed a chance to move off the foot of the WSL table.
Justine Vanhaevermaet, Sara Holmgaard and Kelly Gago sealed all three points for The Toffees, who moved up to seventh in the table.
Vanhaevermaet broke the deadlock just before half-time when he headed home from Sara Holmgaard's corner.
Brian Sorensen's side doubled their advantage within 24 seconds of the restart when Holmgaard nodded in Gago's cross.
The Eagles thought they had a lifeline when referee Adewunmi Soneye pointed to the spot after initially penalising Vanhaevermaet for a challenge on Katie Stengel.
However, he controversially changed his mind after deliberating the call with the assistant referee.
Gago completed the scoring by weaving her way into the Palace box and providing a deft left-footed finish past Shae Yanez in stoppage time.
Aside from the three points, it was a particularly memorable day for Rikke Madsen, as her boyfriend Martin proposed after the match.
