A look back at some of the most iconic Man Utd kits from the 1990s
Manchester United are the most successful team in English football history and they achieved a large portion of their success in the 1990s under the guidance of serial-winning manager Sir Alex Ferguson whilst mainly wearing kits made by Umbro with the Sharp Corporation being the team’s main kit sponsor.
The 1990s marked the start of one of football’s greatest and longest dynasties but at the start of the era there were still many doubts about the qualities of Ferguson as a manager and whether the Glasweigen had what it takes to restore the club to its former glory despite defying the odds with Aberdeen in Scotland.
United finished the 1989/90 season in 13th position and were reportedly considering sacking Ferguson if they did not win the 1990 FA Cup final. United went on to win that final against Crystal Palace and the rest as they say is history.
Over the course of the 1990s, United lifted a grand total of five league titles, four FA Cups, one League Cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and most significantly the 1999 UEFA Champions League which saw them become the first club in English football history to ever win the treble.
The Red Devils had some iconic players in this era, including Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Peter Schmeichel. But what was the best home shirt of the 1990s? Here we count down our top five.

The Manchester United team of the 1990s was a force to be reckoned with, but for their impressively high standards a point tally of 75 points was nothing remarkable compared to years gone by and although they did win the league it was the lowest points haul of the Premier League era.
A year later in this kit, they achieved 77 points but were pipped to the title by Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal. This was a nice kit but there were more memorable in this decade.

Manchester United missed out on the league title for the first time in the Premier League era during the 1994/95 season as Blackburn Rovers reigned supreme. After a summer of high-profile sales and a renewed shift towards youth, Alan Hansen famously uttered the words ‘You can’t win anything with kids’ as United’s class of 92 spent the next two decades proving him wrong.
United won one league title in this kit, coming back from a 12 point deficit to pip Newcastle to the 1996 league title. That same campaign they also overcame Liverpool in the FA Cup final with Eric Cantona enjoying the dream comeback after serving a long-term suspension for a kung-fu kick on a supporter.

The final Manchester United kit before the start of the Premier League era and one of the very few Adidas kits of the 1990s. In terms of design it is right up there and it also coincides with the team’s European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph as United became the first English team to win a European honour after the 1985 Heysel disaster. Star performers of the time included Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes and Denis Irwin.

Manchester United became the first team in history to win the Premier League title in the 1992/93 season and they did it in style with an emphatic 10-point lead over Aston Villa as the likes of Eric Cantona, Mark Hughes and Peter Schemeichel all played starring roles in the team’s success. Steve Bruce was United's captain for much of the season, as the veteran Bryan Robson missed many games due to injury. While the emerging talents of Gary Neville, David Beckham and Nicky Butt all made their debuts, in a season which also saw Ryan Giggs win the Young Player of the Season award.
A year later, United defended their crown as summer signing Roy Keane began to make a huge impact after his British record-breaking £3.75m move from Nottingham Forest. This was just the beginning of a trophy-laden period for the club.
1. 1998-2000
A kit worn during arguably the most cherished night in Manchester United’s recent history as the Red Devils came back from one goal down to beat Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final with two stoppage time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Norweigen super sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It was an unforgettable season for United, who became the first English club in history to win the treble. While the likes of Andy Cole, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville all enjoyed incredible individual campaigns. Everything from the closed up collar, UEFA branding and gold shielded crest makes this a classic, especially in a long sleeve.
