Liverpool urged to sign “perfect player” that “still hasn’t signed with Barcelona”

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild is set to take centre stage this summer, with the uncertain future of Virgil van Dijk prompting the Reds to scout potential replacements.

While Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck has been heavily linked, Bundesliga expert Christian Falk has urged Liverpool to shift their focus to Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, a player also on Barcelona’s radar.

The 28-year-old German international is set to become a free agent this summer, making him an attractive, low-risk target for Arne Slot’s squad overhaul.

Jonathan Tah – A smart, free transfer opportunity for Liverpool?

Liverpool’s transfer priority will be securing a commanding centre-back, especially if van Dijk fails to extend his contract.

Falk, writing for The Daily Briefing, believes Liverpool should challenge Barcelona for Tah’s signature, saying: “I’m always wondering why Liverpool don’t go for Tah, as he would be a perfect player; he’s a free agent in the summer and, still now, he hasn’t signed with Barcelona, so there’s still a little chance there.

“Perhaps Liverpool should be keeping an eye on him as well if they want to sign a new defender!”

Given Tah’s physical dominance, ball-playing ability, and leadership, he could be a smart successor to van Dijk.

He has been a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s title-winning Bayer Leverkusen squad, showcasing his ability to play in a possession-based system – a key trait for Slot’s Liverpool.

Liverpool’s interest in Schlotterbeck faces challenges

While Tah offers an immediate, cost-effective solution, Liverpool’s links to Nico Schlotterbeck remain uncertain.

Falk notes that landing the Dortmund defender would be a significant challenge, stating: “It’s a big question as to whether Liverpool will be concrete for Nico Schlotterbeck in the summer.

“Ultimately, Liverpool are looking for a potential successor for Virgil van Dijk, which is, of course, a very big thing!”

Schlotterbeck is valued at €40m (£33.5m) and remains under long-term contract at Dortmund, meaning Liverpool would need to negotiate a fee, unlike Tah, who can be signed on a free transfer.

Why Tah makes some sense for Liverpool

With Barcelona struggling financially, Liverpool could outmanoeuvre them for Tah’s signature if they act swiftly.

At 28 years old, he offers a perfect blend of experience and prime years, making him an ideal short-term and mid-term solution for the Reds’ defensive transition.

With van Dijk’s contract situation unresolved and Ibrahima Konaté also attracting interest from Real Madrid and PSG, Liverpool must secure reinforcements.
