Manchester United return to action against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City next month
Manchester United went into the international break on a high and will look to build on that momentum when they make their return to action at the start of next month.
The Red Devils advanced into the last eight of the Europa League with a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the second leg of their round of 16 tie. They will now face Ligue outfit Lyon over two legs on April 10 and April 17.
They followed that win up with a 3-0 victory at relegation-bound Leicester City. It proved to be a largely-positive night for the Red Devils as Rasmus Hojlund was able to bring his goal drought to an end. He has since followed that goal up with the winner in Denmark’s 1-0 win over Portugal in the Nations League on Thursday. There was one negative for United against Leicester, however, with young defender Ayden Heaven forced off with an injury early in the second half.
Amorim faces two ruthless Man Utd calls amid injury returns
Heaven posted an update on his injury earlier this week, saying he was “doing well” and “recovering fast”. It is unclear if he will be fit for when United travel to Nottingham Forest on April 1. He has proven a solid addition to United’s starting XI, after his introduction as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal earlier this month. His involvment has partly been down to injuries in the heart of defence.
Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire are both likely to be fit when the Red Devils travel to Forest and Amorim could face the ruthless call of axing Heaven from the starting line-up. It is not the only area of the pitch where the United boss is facing a potentially-tough decision.
Mason Mount was deemed fit enough for the bench at Leicester but did not make an appearance with Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee playing in the attacking midfield roles. The former scored and Amorim faces the decision to drop one of the players for Mount. While Zirkzee has not had the ideal start to his United career, he has showcased signs of improvement in recent weeks. But with three players for two positions, Amorim has a choice to make.
United face Nottingham Forest and Man City next
After two wins before the international break, United face a tough test on their return. They travel to Nottingham Forest and then host Manchester City in their following game, with both sides chasing a spot in the top four.
Amorim has seen improvement from his side in recent weeks, however. Speaking after the win over Leicester he said: "I think the performances are improving and when you have the performance and the result, because the result does not always come with the performance, you feel better.
"I'm starting to see different things in the team, especially today. You can feel a lack of energy in some players but you feel that the team can find the way to win games even when they are a little bit more tired. It's a good sign for this team."
