Seven Liverpool stars may never play another minute as Arne Slot prepares to swing axe

With Liverpool crashing out of the FA Cup, the Champions League and losing in the Carabao Cup final, several players' hopes of earning game time between now and the end of the season appear to have gone up in smoke.

All that remains is for the Reds to seal their Premier League crown, with a 12-point buffer virtually certain to see them through the next nine games. Manager Arne Slot is likely to go full strength down the home stretch as he bids to win the title in his first season at Anfield. And that spells bad news for a number of peripheral players clinging onto hopes of getting a game before the summer transfer window, in which anything could happen.

The most prominent squad member who may already have bid farewell to the Anfield faithful is Caoimhin Kelleher. Ireland's No. 1 has played 44 club games since the start of last season, but he surely cannot play back-up to Alisson for another year.

And even if he wanted to, Liverpool's goalkeeper ranks are set to be shaken up by the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili, who agreed a deal to sign last summer before remaining at Valencia for one final season.

If the prospects of Kelleher getting a farewell appearance are now slim, they are even slimmer for third-choice Viteszlav Jaros. The Czech international has played twice for the first team this season, but that is all he has to show for eight years on the books. And with his contract expiring at the end of June, it appears that his time is nearly up.

Tyler Morton has been in and around Slot's squad this season after two successful loan stints in the Championship. But he has only made five appearances all campaign, and in January he publicly stated that he is 'ready to kick on and be a proper professional'.

Morton is still sidelined with a shoulder injury and he may not return before the end of the campaign.

A number of other Liverpool stars have played their football elsewhere this season, and there is a high chance they will not be welcomed back into the fold.

Ben Doak has shone on loan at Middlesbrough and he is sure to attract permanent bids in the summer, just as he did in January. The same could be true for Stefan Bajcetic, who has not done his chances of breaking into Slot's senior side many favours during underwhelming spells with Red Bull Salzburg and Las Palmas.

Nat Phillips seems destined to move on after six loan spells and nearly a decade at the club, with the 27-year-old's contract up in June, by which point he will have completed his season-long stint at Derby County.

And Rhys Williams, who featured regularly during an injury-hit 2020/21 campaign, could be auctioned off after spending this season with fourth-tier Morecambe. The 24-year-old has just over 12 months to run on his contract and has not played for Liverpool in almost four years.
