A look at the latest on the Marc Guehi transfer front as Crystal Palace brace for interest in their star defender this summer.
Crystal Palace face a battle to keep hold of some of their best players this summer amid a solid campaign so far. A number of their best players have been linked with exits, and perhaps none more than centre-back Marc Guehi.
The England international was heavily pursued last summer, and after staying for another year, it’s likely interest will only increase this summer. Newcastle United were the team who attempted to prise Guehi away from Selhurst Park last summer, and they may be the most likely to return with a fresh offer. Here we round up the latest on that front.
Newcastle United unlikely to get Huijsen
Newcastle have been linked with a move for AFC Bournemouth’s impressive young centre-back Dean Huijsen as a potential alternative to Guehi, but it seems they will struggle to pull off a deal due to interest in Spain, the country the defender lived in from the age of five and now represents internationally.
David Ornstein wrote for The Athletic: "For any top teams seeking a centre-back, Huijsen will likely be on the radar. He is expected to move for that £50m clause, which is active in the summer, and I'm sure Bournemouth, the player and his suitors would ideally like some clarity sooner rather than later so they can plan accordingly.
"We know Chelsea have been looking closely at him, Newcastle have been heavily linked but not sure I see that one materialising and even massive clubs on the continent like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are being mentioned in certain quarters. Some I speak to think he could well move overseas but nothing seems to be set in stone yet.
"Richard Hughes and members of Liverpool's recruitment team will know him particularly well given their links to Bournemouth, but I'm not sure if they're pursuing him (I'll need to make more checks) and you imagine there would need to be some outward movement in the Anfield centre-back department to create space for such a player. Also, is that position their top priority right now? Let's see. I'm sure we'll come back to the Huijsen topic in the weeks ahead!"
Will Newcastle circle back for Guehi?
It’s the logical question given Newcastle are unlikely to land Huijsen this summer. The Magpies fiercely pursued Guehi last summer, with Palace standing firm in their valuation for around £75million, rejecting offers just short of that.
Things have changed since then, and given Guehi is out of contract in the summer of 2026 and unlikely to renew, the Eagles will likely have to lower their asking price to between £60million and £65million. With Guehi still only 24 years of age, the Magpies will surely see good value in that, as might a club like Chelsea, where the defender played previously. The Blues need a new centre-back this summer, and they might look close to home to land one, perhaps sensing some sort of player-plus-cash deal involving Trevoh Chalobah, who Oliver Glasner liked during the defender’s loan spell with the club in the first half of the season. Chelsea recalled Chalobah in January. Tottenham have also been linked with Guehi.
As for Guehi, unless Palace can somehow get him to sign a new contract, it’s likely to be a long summer for the club, or at least those connected to the club that wish to see the centre-back remain in place for next season.
