Report: Man Utd want'high energy'midfielder in cut-price move, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was once quoted£50m

Manchester United need midfield reinforcements this summer and a surprise name from the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era has resurfaced.

Ruben Amorim and his staff are undoubtedly enjoying the international break after a hectic schedule for Manchester United.

Amorim has been juggling Premier League and Europa League commitments lately, with United starting to turn a corner.

United beat Real Sociedad 4-1 in the Europa League before backing it up with a 3-0 win over Leicester City.

Amorim will hope for more positive results between now and the end of the season, before embarking on a hugely important transfer window.

Striker rumours are rife with United interested in signing Hugo Ekitike, but midfielders are likely to be on the radar too.

Manchester United linked with Sean Longstaff move

Christian Eriksen is set to leave United this summer with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

The Dane may not be a nailed-on starter for United but another midfielder will still be needed – and maybe more if Casemiro moves on.

A shock name is now being linked though, with The Chronicle claiming that United are interested in signing Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff.

United fans will remember that Longstaff was wanted in the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era.

United valued Longstaff at £20million back in 2019 but Newcastle wanted around £50million having seen him emerge as a first-team talent.

Nearly six years on, United are now allegedly back in for Longstaff again whilst Everton are also interested.

Longstaff is approaching the final year of his Newcastle contract and a cut-price deal could be a real possibility.

United need better than Sean Longstaff

United’s interest in Longstaff may well have remained over the years, but even his biggest fans would surely accept that he hasn’t quite lived up to his potential.

Longstaff will turn 28 just two months into next season and whilst Eddie Howe praised him as ‘high energy’ when speaking to The Northern Echo, he hasn’t delivered the real quality that United need.

We can understand that United need bodies in midfield and Longstaff’s potential availability without breaking the bank will appeal.

Ineos can’t splash enormous cash in every position this summer and that may make somebody of Longstaff’s ilk attractive.

Ultimately though, Longstaff has played just 27 minutes of Premier League action in 2025 and would not be in Newcastle’s midfield if everybody was fully fit.

This is one potential signing we just can’t get behind and firmly believe that United need better to take Amorim’s side forward.
