Liverpool have been advised to consider replacing Cody Gakpo with Feyenoord winger Igor Paixão, as former Eredivisie manager Rob Jacobs believes the Brazilian could be an upgrade in Arne Slot’s system.
Since joining Liverpool in January 2023 for £35 million from PSV, Gakpo has established himself as a versatile attacking option.
He has played a key role under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, featuring across the frontline. The 25-year-old has made 119 appearances for the Reds, contributing 39 goals and 14 assists.
This season, Gakpo has continued to deliver, registering 16 goals and five assists in 40 appearances.
Despite this, Jacobs believes Liverpool should set their sights on Paixão as a potential summer signing.
Why Liverpool should consider Igor Paixão
Speaking to 1908.nl, Jacobs insisted that Paixão would make Liverpool stronger and suggested that the Merseyside club could make a move for the 24-year-old.
“Then I’ll go for Paixão. I really think he makes Liverpool stronger. Arne Slot should also enjoy his development,” Jacobs said.
“Gakpo is of course also a fantastic player and is doing well at Liverpool, but I think Paixão is better. It wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool would report to Feyenoord. Hey, €40 million or €50 million? They don’t make a fuss about that in England.”
Paixão has been one of the standout performers for Feyenoord, recording 11 goals and 15 assists in 38 appearances this season. His pace, creativity, and ability to break down defences have made him one of the most sought-after wingers in the Eredivisie.
Could Liverpool make a move?
With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz, Liverpool could be in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer.
Slot, who is already familiar with Paixão from his time at Feyenoord, may see the Brazilian as a perfect fit for his system.
If the Reds do decide to invest in Paixão, the reported €50 million price tag is unlikely to be a major obstacle.
Given his age and impressive output, he could represent a long-term option for Liverpool’s attack.
However, whether Liverpool are willing to part ways with Gakpo, who has been a consistent performer, remains to be seen.
