Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for a Premier League midfielder
Manchester United are reportedly keen on a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff this summer.
The Magpies man has started just eight Premier League games this campaign and could be on the move at the end of the season as he looks for more regular game time.
United are set to revamp their squad this summer with Christian Eriksen poised to leave the club while the Red Devils will also aim to sell Casemiro and clear his salary off the wage bill.
Eriksen spoke while on international duty to indicate his exit from United was highly likely this summer. He said: “I haven't thought much about it. In my head I'm prepared to find something new. What that will be is not something I've decided yet. I don't have anything that I think I really want to try, so I'll see what comes and what suits me and the family.”
Longstaff eyed by Man United and Everton
According to Chronicle Live, Longstaff is attracting interest from the Red Devils and Everton as his future at St James’ Park looks uncertain. The homegrown player has not been a regular in Eddie Howe’s starting XI this season. He came on as a sub in the Carabao Cup final but was not given the nod to start.
He has just one year left on his deal with the Magpies and United could look to take advantage of that by getting Longstaff in for a cut price fee. Newcastle could be keen to extract as much money as possible out of selling Longstaff, however, as his sale would count as pure profit as he is an academy player.
Everton could provide competition for his signature and may be in a better position to offer Longstaff more regular game time.
Longstaff discusses previous Man Utd interest
It is not the first time the Red Devils have been linked with Longstaff. Back in 2019, the player was being eyed by the Red Devils but nothing materialised as the Old Trafford club were put off by his £50m asking price.
Longstaff recently opened up on the failed move, and said: “If that move had happened, I'd never have been about for the Newcastle takeover and I'd never have been able to captain the club. There are so many things I wouldn't have been able to do. I'm happy it didn't happen in the end, because what I've gone on to achieve over the last two years - scoring in a League Cup semi-final, getting to play in a cup final, playing in the Champions League - have been things I never thought would happen, playing for Newcastle.
"When the Manchester United stuff came around, I was still still so young. I'd probably deal with it differently now and not allow myself to get caught up in every little thing going on with it. I was coming back from my knee injury at the time, trying to get fit to prove I could still play .”
