Graham Potter has set his sights on Chris Rigg as he looks to strengthen his West Ham team in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers boss will be looking to put his stamp on his West Ham side in the hope of a much more successful Premier League season next term.

Although Potter will want a squad that is ready to perform in the top flight, the boss will also be looking at long-term options as he prepares to kickstart a project in East London.

Potter targeting Rigg in summer transfer move

In his previous roles, particularly at Brighton, Potter proved his has a good eye for picking out younger players with potential and developing that talent.

Rigg is certainly someone with plenty of quality and given the 17-year-old has made 34 Championship appearances this term, it seems as though he will easily make the step up to the top-flight.

According to the print edition of the Sun on Sunday (23 March, page 55), West Ham are ready to make a move for Rigg if Sunderland do not gain promotion to the Premier League this term, with the player having the desire to make the step up.

The Black Cats are said to want around £20million for the services of their midfielder, although the Irons are said to be looking closer to the £10million mark.

Rigg’s omission from the England Under-19 squad could work in West Ham’s favour though.

The report states that the Sunderland player was shocked not to be included in the squad and given Newcastle’s Lewis Miley and Fulham’s Joshua King were selected instead, it could highlight the importance of top-flight football for the youngster.

Potter and Rigg set to be a great match at West Ham

The addition of Rigg at West Ham could be massive for Potter in the summer transfer window although the Premier League side may need to negotiate to get a deal done.

The Black Cats are comfortable in their play-off spot meaning there is a chance they could return to the top-flight this season but given how competitive it is in the Championship, it will not be an easy task.

Rigg may only be 17-years-old but he needs to be thinking about his future and it seems quite clear that a step up to top-flight football is required if he is to continue his development.

The youngster has already shown his desire to succeed and that is exactly what Potter wants from his young players that he is prepared to put the effort into.

If a deal could be completed, this looks like something that could be highly beneficial for both parties.
