Bruno Guimaraes has left the Brazil squad after being ruled out of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier against Argentina.
Fresh from skippering Newcastle United to their first trophy in 56 years after beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, Guimaraes started in Brazil’s late 2-1 win over Colombia in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Barcelona winger Raphinha broke the deadlock just six minutes in but Colombia levelled before half-time when Joelinton was dispossessed on the edge of the box and punished by Liverpool forward Luis Diaz. It had looked to have proven costly up until the ninth minute of stoppage time when Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior found a winner.
Brazil now face rivals Argentina on Wednesday but Guimaraes and three of his teammates won’t be making the trip to Buenos Aires. Guimaraes and Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes serve a one-match, while Liverpool’s Alisson and Flamengo’s Gerson have picked up injuries.
As a result, the quartet have left the squad and been replaced by Paris Saint-Germain defender Beraldo, Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, Atalanta midfielder Ederson and Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton.
A Brazil statement read: “PSG defender Beraldo, midfielders João Gomes, from Wolverhampton, and Éderson, from Atalanta, and goalkeeper Weverton, from Palmeiras, were called up by coach Dorival Jr. this Friday (20) for the Brazilian National Team's game against Argentina, valid for the 14th round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
“The quartet will take the places of Gabriel Magalhães, Bruno Guimarães, Gerson and Alisson. The first two received their second yellow card and will have to serve a suspension.
“Gerson continues to have pain in the back of his left thigh. Alisson, who suffered a head injury, is doing well and has not reported any clinical complaints. However, he needs to follow FIFA's concussion protocol. Both will return to their clubs to continue the recovery process.”

After the win over Colombia, Guimaraes said on social media he was “sad” to be missing the game against Argentina,
Reacting on Instagram, the 27-year-old wrote: “A very important victory. With determination, determination and sweat, in the Brazilian style. Thank you Brasilia for the support. It certainly made a difference for us. We continue to strive for more.
“Sad to be out of the next game, but I am sure that I will be another fan of our team 🇧🇷🙏🏽”
A rare break for Bruno Guimaraes
Guimaraes will enjoy some time with his family before returning to Newcastle ahead of Saturday’s Carabao Cup winners parade on the Town Moor. He will then return to action when United host Brentford in the Premier League on Wednesday, April 2.
The Brazilian has missed just two matches for club and country in the last two seasons, recently leading to suggestions that he was fatigued and needed a break.

In response, head coach Eddie Howe said:“It is up to us to look at his schedule and try and find ways to do that. We have tried, but he’s such an important player wise have turned to him more often than we would ideally want to because of his strengths and qualities.
“So, for example, in the FA Cup, we gave him 45 minutes in the last round and share that burden with Sandro [Tonali]. His schedule is intense. As soon as we have played the Carabao Cup final, he will be off to play for his national team and that will be when others are getting that rest and recuperation.

“He won’t get that but that’s part of being a top player, the benefits of being a top player that he is. But it comes at a cost at times and we have to make sure we protect him.
“He’s in the middle of everything really, he is behind a lot of our good play still. He is an outstanding player and will continue to be. We just need to help him in those moments where we can keep him fresh and get him to his best levels.”
