Former Dolphins Linebacker Signs With Browns

A former Miami Dolphins multi-season starter is on the move again. After splitting time between Seattle and Tennessee last season, linebacker Jerome Baker is headed back home to Northeast Ohio.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, "(Cleveland) Browns have agreed to terms with linebacker Jerome Baker, a Cleveland native and former Buckeye."

Cabot notes that Baker attended Benedictine High School in Cleveland and starred collegiately at Ohio State University. He'll provide some depth in Cleveland's linebacker group and has an outside shot at earning significant playing time.

The Dolphins drafted Baker in the third round (No. 73 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. He quickly rose to the top of Miami's depth chart, spending six seasons as a defensive centerpiece.

Baker started 82 of 94 games he appeared in during his Miami tenure, racking up 581 tackles, 22.5 sacks, five interceptions, 31 tackles for loss, and six forced fumbles. He led the Dolphins in tackles for three consecutive seasons (2019-2021) and was a valuable member of Miami's defense.

Miami released him one year ago, and he hit unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks (one-year, up to $7 million) but only played five games with the organization. In late October, he was traded to the Tennessee Titans for fellow linebacker Ernest Jones IV.

Now on his fourth team since 2023, Baker hopes to catch on with the hometown Browns. If he fails, his time in the NFL might be running out.
