The 2021/22 season was not Chelsea’s worst, especially considering all of the turmoil off the pitch.
Under Thomas Tuchel, the Blues finished third in the Premier League and managed to win both the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
They also got to the final of both domestic cups so could have actually finished the campaign with even more silverware.
Why they never in the end was because this Chelsea team were just not clinical enough in front of goal, an issue the club tried to address by using the transfer market.

Christopher Nkunku was meant to bring goals to Chelsea
During the 2022/23 season, Chelsea agreed a deal with RB Leipzig to sign Christopher Nkunku in the 2023 summer transfer window.
It got Chelsea fans really excited, which was hardly a surprise. Despite not being a recognised centre-forward, Nkunku looked capable of bringing some much-needed firepower to the side.
The 27-year-old’s goal record at Leipzig was very good, especially during the 2021/22 campaign.
Christopher Nkunku’s 2021/22 stats Appearances Goals Assists
Bundesliga 34 20 13
Champions League 6 7 1
Europa League 6 4 0
DFB-Pokal 6 4 2
Total 52 35 16
In the end, though, Nkunku has not managed to add goals to Chelsea’s squad. Nkunku was recently labelled as a “disappointment” by former Premier League striker Troy Deeney, and it is not hard to understand why.

In total, the Frenchman has only scored six times in the English top flight since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
Nkunku has, of course, had injuries. But he is fit again and is not making much of an impact for Enzo Maresca‘s side to the point where the club look done with him.

Christopher Nkunku set for Chelsea exit
Nkunku was heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea during the January transfer window. At the time, it was claimed that Bayern Munich wanted to sign Nkunku.
Nothing materialised in the end, but the France international leaving in the summer now seems very possible.
It is being reported that it is increasingly likely that Chelsea will sell Nkunku in the next transfer window after he blew his “final chance” at the club.
In terms of how much he could cost, the Blues have asked for around £60m in the past, as per GiveMeSport.
It is hard to imagine someone paying that after Nkunku’s recent struggles and Chelsea’s willingness to sell him. But his future does look to be away from west London at this point.
