Declan Rice touts Arsenal teammate Myles Lewis-Skelly for 'long' international career

Earning his first international cap against Albania on Friday, the teenager took only 20 minutes to leave his mark at Wembley.

The Islington-born full-back, who came through the Arsenal academy as a midfielder, received Jude Bellingham’s incisive through ball and finished first time, placing his driven left-footed strike perfectly through Thomas Strakosha’s legs.

Repaying Thomas Tuchel’s faith, he became the youngest player to score on international debut for England at 18 years, five months and 23 days.

With the Three Lions short for depth at left-back, it is likely England boss Tuchel will stick with Lewis-Skelly against Latvia on Monday.

His club and international teammate, Rice, is cautious about putting too much pressure on the Hale End graduate, but notes that his grounded nature and support network set him up for a successful international career.

"When Myles first broke into the \[Arsenal\] team, I knew his talent straight away,” said Rice.

"He trained with us a lot last year at Arsenal but didn’t really play. I saw his talent straight away.

“This year, the way he stepped up and matured over the summer and then the way he has trained with us every day since has been incredible. The way he looks after himself and prepares for matches, he is such a good kid.

“He’s been brought up really well, his Mum is unbelievable for him and she is such a nice lady as well.

“There’s no surprise he is doing really well because he has the right support network around him. He’s got people at the club who are pushing him and he’s not too comfortable as he knows he needs to keep going.

“The other night \[against Albania\], he didn’t find out he was starting until the day and he just took it in his stride and played how he has for Arsenal all season.

“We have so many good left-backs in the country, we can’t not mention Lewis Hall who has been unbelievable for Newcastle this year. Obviously, Shaw has been injured but he’s been unbelievable in an England shirt.

“Nobody is guaranteed a place in this England team. You need to be on it every time you come here and you need to be able to push to start. Myles is only 18.

“We can’t put the emphasis that he’s going to be an England starter for the next ten years on him straight away, you don’t want to put that pressure on him. Just let him keep playing and keep enjoying his football and I’m sure we will keep seeing the best of him.

“If he wants to keep being hungry and the best he can be then he can definitely have a long England career for sure.”
