Anthony Gordon has withdrawn from the England squad due to a hip injury and will return to Newcastle United.

A frustrating fortnight for the winger resulted in him missing the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool through suspension. He was sent off in the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton at St James’ Park on March 2 and has one game of his suspension still to serve.

Gordon was forced to watch from the sidelines a week ago as the Magpies put his boyhood club to the sword. The 24-year-old returned to Wembley on Friday but was named on the bench for Thomas Tuchel’s first game as England manager.

Marcus Rashford was selected but Gordon came on against Albania with 16 minutes remaining. However, the Toon ace did not clap the Wembley crowd off at full-time as he hobbled down the tunnel.

Gordon awkwardly held his hip and Tuchel confirmed he picked up a “worrying” injury. The German said post-match: "He looks injured. At first, I thought it was his stomach but it's his hip and it doesn't look good. It's a bit worrying."

He has now withdrawn from the Three Lions setup and will return to Newcastle for further assessment. The current Toon squad are in Dubai enjoying warm-weather training following the Carabao Cup triumph but will come back to Tyneside for next weekend’s trophy celebrations.

Any lengthy injury to Gordon will deal a major blow to Newcastle’s hopes of Champions League qualification. Harvey Barnes is featuring on the left flank in his absence but Gordon has become one of Eddie Howe’s blue-chip players since arriving from Everton in January 2023.

The setback is hardly the best start for Newcastle’s relationship with the new England manager. Tuchel, ironically, tried to sign Gordon six months before he made his eventual St James’ Park switch.

The German provided a clear picture on Gordon’s injury ahead of England’s game with Latvia. Tuchel said: "It’s just a matter of pain. There’s a big bruise around the hip region and he’s unable to walk properly.

"He's left the camp. He has a huge bruise around the hip region and it was so painful he couldn’t even walk properly. He needs some time to heal and to get better. That’s why he left camp."

"It’s a shame because he had a good chance to start and I’m sad that he is now out. He was so happy to play and get some minutes for us. He had a red card (against Brighton), then he got sick – he came a bit late into camp – and gets his minutes and gets straightaway injured."

"I’m sad for him but we cannot change it and I think he still needs a couple of days rest. So he’s with his family now to get the rest and we find other solutions."

Anthony Gordon admitted Chelsea move was ‘close’ in 2022

Gordon opened up about nearly signing for Chelsea following Tuchel’s appointment in November. He said: "It was quite close, to be honest. I was desperate to go at the time and work with him especially.

“I felt like my style would suit his style of play, the way he was playing at Chelsea which was very exciting for me. It didn't end up happening. It was a big opportunity for me that didn't end up happening and I'm looking forward to getting to work with him a couple of years later."
