West Ham thought they had struck gold when they signed experienced striker Niclas Fullkrug last summer, but the move has not gone to plan so far.

Fullkrug joined the Hammers from Borussia Dortmund after an outstanding campaign last season, in which he helped the Bundesliga side reach the Champions League final before impressing at Euro 2024.

However, the 32-year-old has made just 11 appearances across all competitions, in a season which has been heavily disrupted by injury.

Fullkrug has not appeared in the Premier League since January, but he could now be nearing a return to action.

“I am on a good path. I am back in team training. I am being led slowly, it was a lengthy injury,” he stated.

Fullkrug could be in danger of losing his spot with the German national team, with Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tim Kleindienst impressing upfront.

Will Niclas Fullkrug start for West Ham?

Once Fullkrug returns to full fitness, he will have a lot of competition for a place in the team. January signing Evan Ferguson has hardly featured since he joined from Brighton, and there has been a change of system under Graham Potter.

Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus have started as a front two in recent weeks, moving away from systems which employed Michail Antonio as a target man under David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui.

Fullkrug could prove to be a useful option off the bench for the remainder of this season though, as he did for Germany at the Euros last year, but there is a long way to go before he can justify the fee spent to bring him in last summer.

With Antonio out for a lengthy spell, Potter will hope that Fullkrug can prove himself to be useful before the end of the campaign, to set himself up for a more positive season than the one he has just endured.
