Tape Breakdown
Taylor Elgersma is a legend in the U Sports League of Canada, winning the Heisman Trophy equivalent in 2024. However, the difference in play style between Canada and the United States will be hard for him to overcome.
Elgersma’s arm talent is impressive and is the reason he received an invite to the 2025 Senior Bowl. He displays good accuracy to all three levels of the field, and deep accuracy is the best part of his game. He has no trouble pushing the ball downfield, and when he does, he throws with perfect accuracy, leading to explosive plays.
Elgersma does a good job layering throws over the linebackers’ heads, especially when throwing dig routes. His favorite concept is dagger, which usually ends up in an explosive play due to his exceptional deep-ball accuracy. When throwing corner routes, he puts great touch on the ball, sailing it over defenders’ heads and dropping it in the receiver’s bucket.
There is no denying Elgersma’s ability to throw with good accuracy in a clean pocket, but it worries me when there is pressure in the pocket, as his awareness needs a lot of work. He can move around the pocket into defenders, causing sacks. He has a lot of trouble identifying when a blitz is coming and only takes notice when he is about to be taken down. This results in him fumbling the ball from his blindside.
His rushing ability is average, and Elgersma has no burst to get ahead of a defender. He does not avoid sacks, which highlights his average athletic ability. On this play, he does not sense obvious pressure at the line of scrimmage and cannot avoid the sack because he realizes it too late.
When Elgersma does get the ball out against pressure, he loses a lot of confidence and puts the ball in dangerous spots. You can see him in the film starting to hesitate when under duress, and that big gunslinger we see when he is in a clean pocket disappears. He always looks toward the closest receiver option when there is pressure because he cannot avoid a sack and tries to create something out of the pocket. On this play, a dangerous throw could have resulted in an interception, but the receiver made a play to knock it down.
While his accuracy is the best part of his game, Elgersma’s arm strength is lacking, and when he throws across the field, the ball floats. That limits YAC opportunities and gives defenses time to flow to the ball. He struggles when he must get through his progressions and throw the ball from the hash to the field, where a fast defensive back can intercept the floating ball.
Conclusion
Taylor Elgersma is an interesting prospect because of his pedigree in Canada and the question of how it will translate to the NFL. The competition he played against was not impressive, and the defenses played with low awareness and not great athletes. His accuracy is extremely impressive, and I like his ability to process information in a clean pocket. However, his pocket awareness, struggles under pressure, and weaker arm are concerns for his NFL future. My comp for him is Connor Cook.
