The New York Giants are rumored to be among the teams looking to acquire New England Patriots backup quarterback Joe Milton III. The asking price for Milton is reportedly a third-round pick.
Milton is only available because the Patriots signed Josh Dobbs in free agency.
This would not be a good deal for the Giants. If it is something they are considering, they should abandon the thought before parting with real draft cpaital.
Milton is a decent prospect, but after signing Jameis Winston and looking to draft a quarterback next month, the Giants cannot part with a third-round pick for Milton.
If the Giants do not get a quarterback in the first round of the April draft, they can certainly get one on Day 2 who can be groomed to start with an extra year of a rookie contract to play with.
Selecting Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss with the 34th pick would be a better choice than trading for Milton. If the Giants were destined to use their third-round pick on a quarterback, Kyle McCord from Syracuse might offer better odds of starting, too.
Milton was a good, if inconsistent, college quarterback at Tennessee, but has not proven anything in the NFL to justify a third-round pick. If he demonstrably more likely to hit than a third-round rookie?
Milton was a sixth-round pick by the Patriots, completing the trade that sent Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

To spend a third-round selection on a guy who has 19 snaps under his belt and was drafted in the later rounds isn't the best use of resources, especially for a roster that needs every pick it can get.
The chances of Milton getting cut by the Patriots in training camp, if they are impressed with Dobbs would be significant.
New England head coach Mike Vrabel will probably keep two quarterbacks on the active roster and perhaps one on the practice squad. They could poach Milton if and when they can get him for nothing, if they really need him.
The Giants need to keep the third-round pick and plan on getting their quarterback of the future in the NFL Draft come April.
