British actress Indy Lewis chatted about starring in the show “House of David” on Amazon Prime Video, where she plays Mychal.
Synopsis of ‘House of David’
This series tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David (Michael Iskander), who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride.
At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king.
As Saul loses his power over his kingdom, David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfill his destiny, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. As one leader falls, another must rise.
Indy Lewis on being a part of ‘House of David’
On being a part of “House of David,” she said, “It was really, really fun. We got to go to Greece, and that was definitely a real highlight of the whole experience. It’s the closest I’ve ever felt with a cast. We got close so quickly, and it was really beautiful; it was like a family.”
Working with Michael Iskander
On working with Michael Iskander as David, she exclaimed, “Michael was fantastic. It’s the first time that I worked with someone who is so fresh, so it was quite refreshing. We both really cared about our roles respectively, so there was a seriousness in that way.”
“Also, Michael is a really lovely guy. All of those scenes were fantastic,” she admitted.
Playing Mychal in ‘House of David’
“My favorite part of playing Mychal is the family scenes that we had and being able to really jump into those different dynamics,” she said.
“The relationship that she has with her siblings and with her parents is so realistic, and there is so much love there. It is so complex and the way that different people bring out different sides of her has been really interesting and fun to play,” she elaborated.
“Mychal is a bit of a people pleaser, for sure,” she admitted. “Mychal is someone that goes into a room and has to monitor and work out how everyone is feeling. She has to take the temperature of the room before she can understand how to enter and what to bring in, and what people need from her.”
The digital age
On being a part of the digital age, Lewis said, “Personally, I have never worked in the theatre professionally before; I have only worked in TV.”
“So, I don’t have that much of a background but definitely for this job, the social media aspect of it and the way that it blows up is really interesting. You are hearing from people from all over the world, so that connectivity is really interesting,” she explained.
Dream acting partner: Vicky Krieps
Lewis listed Vicky Krieps as her dream acting partner. “I’ve been loving Vicky at the moment. I think she is absolutely incredible. Everything she is in is fantastic,” she exclaimed.
Advice for young and aspiring actors
For young and emerging actors, she said, “I would say ‘understand why you want to do this and make sure you keep checking in with that motivation.’ Always ask yourself why it is that you love doing that.”
Favorite mottos to live by
On her favorite mottos to live by, Lewis said, “Be kind to yourself. Also, just because people carry it well, it doesn’t mean it’s not heavy… that’s another good one to keep in mind.”
Best advice ever been given
On the best advice that she has ever been given, she shared, “You can’t prep too much because if you prep too much you are doing a bit of a disservice to whoever you are doing the scene with. There is only so much of a foundation that you can build for yourself.”
“You have to be able to be in a place where you can receive different ideas and different energies and roll with it,” she added.
Success
Regarding her definition of the word success, Lewis said, “I am not sure yet. I think success so far for me is feeling happy and content with the work that I am putting out, and coming off a day on set and feeling like you’ve done justice to the scene that you had to do, and the people you had to do the scene with.”
Closing thoughts on ‘House of David’
For fans and viewers, she expressed about “House of David,” “It’s the biggest role that I’ve ever had.”
“Being able to have a character that has so many scenes and relationships with so many people has been really incredible, and it has been able to build my character up so much more than I could do by myself,” Lewis concluded.
