Newcastle United join Chelsea in race for Nigerian striker

Newcastle United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Nigerian striker this summer. The player has impressed in Bundesliga but is very likely to move away in the summer window.

The star in question here is Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen. The Nigerian joined the German outfit in summer 2023. In his first season, he helped Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in their history. He scored 21 goals and picked 9 assists last season.

However, the story has not been same for the 24 year old striker this time. He has fallen out of favour of head coach Xabi Alonso. As a result, he has started only 10 league games this term. He was already linked with exit in January where Saudi side Al-Nassr were close to sign him.

The deal with Al-Nassr collapsed as they opted to sign Jhon Duran instead. But, Boniface still has interest from England where Chelsea are said to be front-runners. As the Nigerian is still only 24, joining Premier League will be a major step-up in his career.

The Blues are believed to definately sign another striker this summer. Boniface can be a great addition as he has all the key assets to become successful on English soil. But, the West London club now faces competition from Magpies.

Newcastle United join the race for Victor Boniface

According to Football Insider, the Magpies are showing interest in Boniface ahead of summer window. They are having doubts over the future of Alexander Isak who is heavily linked with Arsenal and Liverpool. Hence, they may make a move for Nigerian striker if Isak decides to leave.

Isak may still opt to stay at Newcastle but it will heavily depend on wheter they are able to qualify for UCL. As of now, they have high chance to finish in top four but will need to stay consistent in all of the remaining games. If Isak does leave, the Magpies will still be able to earn a hefty profit and spend it wisely for future plans.
