Former chief Manchester United scout Mick Brown has had his say.

Manchester United are expected to oversee a number of significant changes once they put the 2024/25 Premier League season behind them. The summer transfer window will bring plenty of opportunities for Ruben Amorim to revamp his squad, backed by Jim Ratcliffe.

One of the biggest reports to emerge recently is United’s stance on the future of Kobbie Mainoo. Viewed by many as the future of the club, it has now been claimed that the Red Devils are willing to part ways with the academy product.

Amid talks of a summer clearout, Mainoo could be in line for an exit following the latest report of him seeking a pay rise. According to the Daily Mail, the 19-year-old’s representatives are looking to secure a new deal for their client worth £180,000 per week plus bonuses, while the club are hopeful of reaching a ‘compromise’.

While his future remains uncertain, Chelsea have shown interest in signing Mainoo this summer. Former chief scout Mick Brown has revealed that if he does leave, United would rather not sell Mainoo to a Premier League team. However, Brown has criticised United’s approach to offloading players like the talented midfielder in order to raise cash.

Man United transfer approach criticised by former club scout

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown revealed that Chelsea are ‘still interested’ in signing Mainoo but United would rather cash in to a club overseas.

“It annoys me that Man United are prepared to let players like Mainoo go in the interest of raising money and making profits. For me, it goes against everything the club have worked to build over a number of years.

“What they should be doing is building around players like Mainoo, [Alejandro] Garnacho and other young players they’ve got instead of spending huge sums on players who aren’t good enough.

“But, this is how they’re choosing to do things, they’re going to sell these players and raise funds. Based on that, I expect they’ll be looking to sell to the highest bidder. Whether that’s the likes of PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid or if it’s Chelsea, whoever is prepared to pay the big bucks is the one they’ll accept.”

Jim Ratcliffe discusses future of Man United

Jim Ratcliffe has divided fans recently with some comments made about the current United team. Admitting he knows he is an ‘unpopular’ figure right now, the INEOS chairman stressed these ongoing changes are necessary to get the club back on top.

“If people want to see Manchester United winning trophies again then we have do all this stuff. I recognise I'm unpopular at the moment — but I am prepared to be, and I can deal with being unpopular for a period of time because I believe that what we're doing is the right thing,” Ratcliffe said in an interview with BBC Sport.

“Manchester United has come off the rails — we need to get it back on the rails, and I believe what we are doing will put it back on the rails and we'll finish up being where Liverpool or Real Madrid are today in the future.”
