Matildas Abroad Review: Foord scores 50th goal for Arsenal; Gorry named Player of the Match

Caitlin Foord scored the opening goal as Arsenal made a statement with their 4-0 victory over Liverpool.

Elsewhere, Hoffenheim fell to Bayern Munich in a heartbreaking semi-final defeat, while Birmingham City dropped points in a tight Championship promotion race.

England

Women’s Super League

Everton defeated Crystal Palace 3-0 to rise well and truly out of the relegation battle. Justine Vanhaevermaet, Sara Holmgaard and Kelly Gago were the goal-scorers on a successful day for the Toffees. Clare Wheeler was unavailable for this match after not recovering in time from a recent illness.

Arsenal enacted some level of revenge for their FA Cup defeat, overcoming Liverpool 4-0. Caitlin Foord got scoring underway before two own goals, and a goal to Mariona Caldentey, sealed the result. Foord started and played the full game as did Steph Catley. Kyra Cooney-Cross was an unused substitute. Teagan Micah was on the bench for Liverpool. Foord was named Player of the Match in the victory, scoring her 50th goal for the Gunners in the game.

West Ham defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0. An own goal separated the two teams for the majority of the game before Viviane Asseyi sealed the three points in the 90th minute. Katrina Gorry started and played the full match for the Hammers and was named Player of the Match. Charli Grant started for Tottenham, while Hayley Raso was a second-half substitute and Clare Hunt remained on the bench.

A stoppage-time winner to Erin Cuthbert ensured that Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1. City scored first through Kerolin before second-half goals to Aggie Beever-Jones and Cuthbert earned three points for the Blues. Mary Fowler was a second-half substitute for City while Sam Kerr remains unavailable for Chelsea. The defending champions are now eight points clear on top of the WSL table with five games remaining.

Despite a second-half comeback, three first-half goals for Leicester City ensured that they defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 3-2. The result means that the Foxes are now six points clear of relegation, and it is now very much seemingly a two-horse race between Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Courtney Nevin was an unused substitute for Leicester.

In the final game of the round, Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 4-0 to remain equal on points with Arsenal in second, and to keep Villa only one point ahead of Crystal Palace in last.

Women’s Championship

Birmingham City lost ground in the promotion race on the weekend, with a stoppage time equaliser meaning that their clash with Charlton ended 1-1. Lee Geum-min scored early for Birmingham before Mel Filis scored the crucial equaliser for Charlton in the 91st minute. They remain top of the table by one point, but London City Lionesses in second have a game in hand on them. Emily van Egmond started the match for Birmingham.

United States

Portland Thorns and Angel City FC played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Kennedy Fuller opened the scoring for Angel City before Reilyn Turner equalised later in the half. Despite accumulating double the shots, Portland was not able to score what would have been a decisive second goal. Kaitlyn Torpey and Mackenzie Arnold started for Portland, while Alanna Kennedy once again lined up in midfield for Angel City.

North Carolina Courage fell 2-1 to Seattle Reign FC. Jess Fishlock and Jordyn Bugg scored for Seattle and the Courage were not able to get back into the game, despite late pressure. Cortnee Vine was not named in the matchday squad.

France

Lyon eased past Saint-Étienne, defeating them 5-0. They were able to pile on the goals despite a heavily rotated squad, resting players ahead of the second leg of their UWCL quarter-final midweek. Ellie Carpenter was one of those rested players and was not named in the matchday squad.

Sweden

AIK Fotboll started their 2025 Damallsvenskan season in the best possible fashion, defeating Linköping 2-0. Adelisa Grabus and Aleksandra Bogucka were the goal scorers, both in the second half. Jada Whyman remains unavailable with injury.

Kristianstads DFF suffered a dramatic late defeat, falling to Djurgården 2-1. Kristianstads took the lead early in the first half and kept it for the majority of the game until goals in the 85th and 90th minutes broke the hearts of the visitors. Remy Siemsen started the match up top for Kristianstads, while Amy Sayer remains unavailable as she continues her ACL rehabilitation.

Denmark

FC Nordsjælland suffered a costly defeat on the weekend, falling 2-1 to Aarhus. They are now five points behind Fortuna Hjørring in first, but still have plenty of games in the season to try to chase them down. Winonah Heatley started and played the full match for Nordsjælland.

Netherlands

FC Twente defeated Heerenveen 3-0 and, after Ajax dropped points, now find themselves in second in the league – equal on points, and three goals behind PSV. Daniela Galic was an unused substitute for Twente.

Germany

TSG Hoffenheim have fallen 3-2 to Bayern Munch in the DFB Pokal semi-final. Hoffenheim raced to a two-goal lead before a hattrick to Pernille Harder reeled them in to earn Bayern a hard-fought victory. Jamilla Rankin started and played the full match for Hoffenheim.
