How Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella fared in Spain’s Nations League win over Netherlands

Club football has paused for several days to allow countries to play in different tournaments.

Chelsea have been very convincing with their performances in 2025, with the Blues winning just four of their 10 Premier League matches in the new year.

Their latest defeat came at Arsenal earlier this month when Mikel Merino struck a 20th-minute winner at the Emirates Stadium.

Enzo Maresca’s side will aim to bounce back when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Stamford Bridge on April 3.

However, the focus of Football Blogs is currently on international action, with most of their players representing their respective nations.

Marc Cucurella was in action yesterday for Spain as they beat the Netherlands on penalties to reach the Nations League semi-finals after a 3-3 draw.

La Roja took the lead twice in normal time only to get pegged back by the hosts. Lamine Yamal looked to have won it for his team when he scored 13 minutes into extra time, but Xavi Simons’ penalty goal sent the tie to spot-kicks.

Nao Lang and Yamal failed to hit the target before Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon denied Donyell Malen with a brilliant effort. Pedri made no mistake from the spot to secure a semi-final spot for his nation.

How Cucurella fared on international duty

Mikel Oyarzabal was undoubtedly the standout performer for Spain as the Real Sociedad forward struck twice in normal time.

However, Cucurella also produced a solid display for his country in Sunday’s victory.

The 26-year-old was excellent in defence and kept Jeremie Frimpong relatively quiet.

He had 73 touches in the game and completed 55 of his 60 passes (92% accuracy).

Cucurella won 100% of his ground duels and completed three of his five long balls.

He lost possession of the ball on nine occasions but registered two clearances, a tackle and an interception.
