The first Korean data on physical and emotional changes over time in incurable cancer patients are expected to be available by 2027.
Chungnam National University Sejong Hospital said Monday that Professor Kwon Jung-hye of the Department of Hematology-Oncology has been selected as the principal investigator for the National Cancer Center’s (NCC) project, “Quality of Life Follow-up Cohort of Incurable Cancer Patients Visiting Regional Cancer Centers,” which will be funded with 1.3 billion won ($885,257) until December 2027.

The study will involve 12 medical institutions, including 10 regional cancer centers in 10 provinces (Gangwon, Gyeonggi, South Gyeongsang, Daejeon, Busan, Ulsan, Incheon, North Jeolla, Jeju, and North Chungcheong) and Chungnam National University Sejong Hospital.
According to the hospital, it is expected to mark a step toward identifying healthcare disparities that cancer patients and families in the region experience or may experience during the treatment process, identifying the unmet needs of cancer patients and their caregivers, and developing solutions to address them.
The study will include 720 patients and 432 caregivers, divided into four cohorts of advanced cancer patients and families: those who have decided not to pursue aggressive cancer treatment; those with those with external medical devices; those with metastases in the brain or spine; and those who have developed complications from bone metastases.
Cancer patients and their families will participate in surveys every three months, assessing their quality of life, emotional state, nutrition, and physical functioning during treatment.
“Until now, there have been many cross-sectional studies that collect the physical and emotional status of cancer patients once, but there have been few studies that continuously identify the difficulties faced by cancer patients and their caregivers over time like this study,” Professor Kwon said.
She anticipates that this study will provide a deeper understanding of the difficulties faced by cancer patients and their families and will be used as a resource to help develop necessary health services in the community and establish welfare policies.
