How Man Utd could receive £5 million and still have their whole summer transfer window ruined

For a cash-strapped club pleading poverty at every stage, Man Utd could soon be in a unique position where they would want to avoid earning £5 million!

Manchester United have made no secret of their dire financial situation, reflected in rising ticket prices, increased hospitality seats, numerous layoffs, and much more.

Therefore, to think that they would turn away a windfall of £5 million, no strings attached, because it would ruin their whole transfer window seems a bit extreme.

However, that’s exactly the situation they could find themselves in after the emergence of recent reports surrounding the same.

Man Utd’s £5 million problem

United could be about to be a part of a landmark move in transfer window history where an obligation to buy will be broken.

The club must have thought they had gotten rid of the most expensive problem at Old Trafford last summer when a loan deal for Jadon Sancho was sorted.

Sancho moved on loan but Chelsea retained an obligation to buy for about £25 million, subject to their finishing position in the league.

When Sancho started well at Chelsea, that seemed like a no-brainer but the winger has reverted to his former self in recent months.

Sancho’s been doing so badly in London that there were reports of Chelsea exploring options to send him back to United, washing their hands off the obligation.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that they can do the same by paying United just £5 million, a fee that seems insanely low for breaking an obligation.

And it just gets worse because United will hardly be celebrating that windfall as it will ruin their summer window to a big extent.

Jadon Sancho’s return will ruin Man Utd’s window

At a time when United are eager to trim their wage bill and restructure their salaries across the squad, bringing back a non-contributor on £250k/week is hardly ideal.

United are still paying Sancho about £50k/week to play for Chelsea, only to get unprofessional comments from him for the club.

Amorim will be eager to move past Sancho, effectively a mistake by the previous management, so his return will United’s window.

Not only will they have a quarter of a million locked up in wages, Sancho’s value is now at an all-time low after his failed Chelsea move.

United could at least point to his exploits with Dortmund while negotiating a move for him last summer but that’s all done and dusted now.

The optics are bad and the finances are even worse. At the current rate, he’s looking like United’s worst-ever signing considering current circumstances, transfer fee, and his wages.
