It’s been a slightly strange international break but a busy one for several of our Newcastle United stars.
The first of 2025 and a welcome break for many – including fans who rarely enjoy the pause on Premier League football – although the timing of this one came just after the elation of our Carabao Cup final celebrations eight days ago.
Here we round up how each of our senior players have got on so far, featuring a few important wins, Nations League exits, late drama, one ban and an injury:
England 2-0 Albania – Dan Burn’s first start for his country, which included a clean sheet, plenty of no nonsense defending and him crashing the bar with a first half header! Anthony Gordon came off with a hip injury that’s seen him return to Tyneside and Tino Livramento was an unused substitute.
England vs Latvia – Livramento has been left out of the squad for tonight’s game, with Morgan Gibbs-White and JarellQuansah replacing him and the injured Gordon.
Italy 1-2 Germany – Tonali returned to the San Siro in Italy’s Nations League play-off first leg, scoring the opener in a game Germany went on to win 2-1 thanks to a second half comeback. A bad result but an impressive man off the match performance from our midfield maestro.

Germany 3-3 Italy – A tough night for Tonali on Sunday, with the Italian looking a little jaded after three big games in seven days. After going 3-0 down, his country pulled it back to 3-3 but went out in a 5-4 aggregate defeat, with Tonali taken off on 68 minutes.
Brazil 2-1 Colombia – Bruno started but an early booking leaves him facing a one-game ban for Brazil. Joelinton replaced the injured Gerson and lost the ball in the build up to Colombia’s equaliser, before Vinicius Junior won it in the 99th minute for the Selecao.
Argentina vs Brazil – A big game in World Cup qualifying in the early hours of Wednesday morning, but there’ll be no Bruno after his yellow last week leaves him suspended. Joelinton will be hoping for a start in his absence.
Luxembourg 1-0 Sweden – A friendly defeat for Isak’s Sweden but a shock one nevertheless. Our star striker played an hour before coming off.
Sweden vs Northern Ireland – Another friendly and hopefully an injury-free Tuesday night for Isak, who will be needed a week on Wednesday for our home clash with Brentford.
Slovakia 0-0 Slovenia – Dubravka kept a clean sheet in the first leg of Slovakia’s Nations League play-off first leg, leaving it all to play for on Sunday night.
Slovenia 1-0 Slovakia – The Toon stopper kept another clean sheet in the 90 minutes, making six saves in a solid display, but a 95th-minute goal in added time saw Slovenia go through at Dubravka’s expense.
Greece 0-1 Scotland – Perhaps seeing the impact of his total lack of game time on Tyneside, Vlachodimos dropped to the bench at Scotland took a 1-0 lead from Greece in their Nations League play-off first leg.
Scotland 0-3 Greece – Watching from the bench again, Vlachodimos’ Greek’s advanced after a convincing 3-0 win at Hampden Park saw Scotland relegated from Nations League A.
Wales 0-2 England – The Geordie midfielder played the full 90 in a comfortable win alongside potential Toon target Tyler Dibling.
England 0-0 Turkey – Captained the U19s in a draw with Turkey, starting alongside Sunderland’s Chris Rigg. Next up is Portugal on Tuesday.
