After their Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool, Newcastle United fans remain high on a giddy train ride and basking in the achievement that has brought an end to their silverware drought and bought some hope for Newcastle’s future again. Football and the transfer window, however, wait for no one. Having already made noises regarding squad building, there is talk of what the likes of Eddie Howe’s side can do to secure champions’ league spots.
Top of the shopping list? A quality right-winger. Who is the name that’s lining up to? Noni Madueke. According to Newcastle United, the Chelsea winger may be top of their list of targets for the summer transfer window, and they could do a lot worse.
Why Noni Madueke Is Perfect for Newcastle
Last season and ahead of the new campaign, one position on which Newcastle United’s attack was missing was a reliable right flank presence. Recently, the Magpies have dragged along a patchwork solution consisting of Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes with Miguel Almiron’s departure in January. Sure efforts, admirable, but none quite so long-term solution.
Enter Noni Madueke. The English winger has not featured heavily for Chelsea in the season and still has eight goals and four assists in 28 appearances. Given Newcastle fans’ love for a player who can pull off the spectacular, though, that’s not a bad option either.
Madueke is quick, creative, and above all, he’s not afraid to face up to defenders. What about him breaking up with the electric Anthony Gordon and the ever-dangerous Alexander Isak? That is a front three that could give Premier League defenses sleepless nights.
Chelsea’s Dilemma: Will They Let Madueke Go?
And of course, this is not as simple as Newcastle waving a checkbook and sending Madueke up to St James’ Park. Unlike your uncle after Christmas dinner, Chelsea’s squad is bloated, and will they really push one of their most promising young talents out the door?
Forces might compel them to submit to Financial Fair Play. The sale of such a key player would help Chelsea reduce their spending in light of their massive spending spree. For Newcastle, whose owners have, to put it mildly, deep pockets, this could be the perfect time to complete their project.
