DaysofPal – A 17-year-old Palestinian detainee, Walid Khaled Abdullah Ahmad, has died in Israel’s Megiddo Prison, marking yet another fatality among imprisoned Palestinians as reports of systematic abuse and neglect continue to mount.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club confirmed Ahmad’s death late Sunday, describing him as one of hundreds of Palestinian children held in Israeli prisons under dire conditions.
In a statement on Monday, the organization highlighted that child prisoners routinely face torture, starvation, and medical neglect.
Detainees are subjected to humiliation, abuse, and violent crackdowns by Israeli authorities, including the use of attack dogs, as seen in recent images leaked from Megiddo Prison.
Megiddo has gained notoriety as one of the harshest Israeli detention centers, particularly since the start of the war on Gaza. It houses a special section for child prisoners, known as “Ashbal” (lion cubs), where conditions are reportedly inhumane.
Ahmad is the second Palestinian prisoner to die in Megiddo within 20 days, following the death of detainee Khaled Abdullah on March 3.
Palestinian organizations have accused Israeli authorities of systematically targeting prisoners through prolonged abuse and medical neglect.
### **Prison Epidemics**
Reports from legal teams and human rights groups indicate that Palestinian prisoners in Megiddo and other Israeli detention centers suffer from widespread illnesses, exacerbated by unsanitary conditions and the lack of medical care.
Scabies, a highly contagious skin disease, has spread rapidly due to the absence of hygiene products and clean clothing.
Several detainees have died from preventable illnesses in recent months, raising alarms about the deteriorating conditions inside Israeli prisons.
### **Calls for International Action**
“The prison system has become another tool of genocide, aimed at slowly killing detainees,” the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club stated. The organization warned that time is running out for thousands of prisoners—especially elderly, sick, and wounded detainees—who are left without medical treatment.
Human rights advocates are calling for an independent international investigation into the deaths of dozens of Palestinian detainees, citing torture, starvation, and even reports of sexual violence.
They have urged the international community to hold Israeli officials accountable for war crimes and impose sanctions to curb the ongoing violations.
### **Rising Death Toll**
Since the start of the Israeli assault on Gaza, 63 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli custody. As of early March, more than 9,500 Palestinians remain imprisoned in Israeli detention centers, not including those captured from Gaza and held in military camps.
The latest death further fuels concerns over the treatment of Palestinian prisoners, as global rights groups continue to demand justice and accountability.
