Huddersfield Town international round-up as Brodie Spencer faces Newcastle United goal machine

Huddersfield Town defender Brodie Spencer hopes his Northern Ireland side can “put on a good performance again” when they take on Sweden in Stockholm tomorrow evening.

The Green and White Army face the Swedes in their second friendly during the international break at the Strawberry Arena, having drawn 1-1 with Switzerland in the first at Windsor Park on Friday.

Isaac Price gave the hosts a 16th-minute lead in Friday’s encounter, before Vincent Sierro earned the visitors a draw with a 28th-minute strike.

Spencer played the full 90 minutes of the clash against the Swiss, and the defender is hopeful of backing up Friday’s result with another positive showing tomorrow evening.

“It will be a tough game and a game full of concentration,” Spencer told the BBC. “It will be a game full of important moments, and hopefully we can go out and put on a good performance again.

“We knew we had to try and kick on from the Nations League. Being able to top the group was a great experience for us all.”

Spencer could come up against the likes of Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak and Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga tomorrow night. On the prospect of facing such high-quality opposition, Spencer added: “You want to play against the best, to test yourself and see where that puts you.

“Being a young defender, to have that challenge so early in my career would be amazing.”

Terriers’ forward Tawanda Chirewa could also be in action for Zimbabwe tomorrow when they take on Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier in Uyo. The Wolves loanee featured as a second-half substitute in the Warriors’ 2-2 draw against Benin on Thursday.

That result left Zimbabwe bottom of their qualifying group at the halfway stage of their campaign, on three points from five matches played. Nigeria are fourth in the table after registering a 2-0 victory away to Rwanda on Friday, on six points from five games.

Previewing tomorrow's encounter, Chirewa told the Standard: “I am just looking at recovery and going again on Tuesday against Nigeria, which is a very good team.

“A lot of their players play in England and Europe. Obviously I want to go out there and show what I can do. Our team has got so many good players as well so we can’t fear Nigeria.”
