Italian giants AS Roma are reportedly eyeing up Aston Villa midfielder Enzo Barrenechea, who is gaining plenty of admirers while out on loan in Spain.

The Argentinian only arrived at Villa Park last summer as fan-favourite Douglas Luiz make the switch to Juventus. It was believed the player would not get enough minutes under Unai Emery this season, so a decision was made that saw him shipped out to Valencia temporarily.

But it turns out the 23-year-old has been mightily impressive under former West Brom manager Carlos Corberán, form that was rewarded with an international call-up. As such, some of the biggest clubs in Europe are understood to be circling him, which puts a massive question mark over his immediate future at Villa.

Italian newspaper Leggo is reporting Serie A's AS Roma have "set their sights" on signing Barrenechea in the summer. The Giallorossi’s interest can be traced as far back as last year as they were one of many clubs interested in his services before the midfielder made the decision to swap Turin for Birmingham.

There is also the belief a deal can easily be struck between both the player and the club given the "very good" relationship between Barrenechea and Matias Soule, Roma's fellow Argentine. The pair are reportedly close friends and had shared the dressing room during their time at Juventus.

So far this season, Barrenechea has become a regular fixture of the Valencia team and has gone on to play 21 La Liga games, scoring once and assisting twice. The price tag Villa would place on the player remains unknown, but according to Transfermarkt, he is worth around £7.5m.
