Ruben Amorim must avoid at all costs of walking back on crucial Erik ten Hag call at Old Trafford, Man Utd star doesn't suit him– opinion

Ruben Amorim must remain firm on what former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag did at Old Trafford around one first-team Red Devils player.

Erik ten Hag’s reign as Manchester United manager ended last October after a shocking start to the 2024-25 season led to his axing from the Red Devils.

The 55-year-old United manager’s departure from Old Trafford paved the way for Ruben Amorim’s arrival from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP last November.

Ahead of Amorim’s appointment as United manager in 2024, Ruud van Nistelrooy served as interim Red Devils boss for a four-match managerial spell.

Ruud van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford last summer as part of Ten Hag’s United coaching staff, but Amorim did not retain the United legend’s services.

Amorim has faced the difficult test in navigating the remainder of the Red Devils’ 2024-25 campaign and the 40-year-old United manager has faced an uphill task.

United currently languish in 13th place and the Red Devils are on course for their worst finish in the table since the Premier League’s formation back in 1992.

Ruben Amorim could face Erik ten Hag problem with potential Jadon Sancho return to Old Trafford

Jadon Sancho has been away from Old Trafford in the 2024-25 Premier League season after Chelsea signed the Manchester United winger on loan last summer.

Chelsea’s deal for the 24-year-old ex-Borussia Dortmund ace included an obligation for the Blues to sign him this coming summer for a fee between £20m to £25m.

However, Jadon Sancho has deeply disappointed at Stamford Bridge and he has only scored twice in 28 matches for Chelsea across all competitions this season.

The United loanee has six assists to his name in a Chelsea shirt, but he faces a real uphill battle in impressing Blues boss Enzo Maresca for the remainder of the season.

However, an interesting twist has emerged after it was revealed that Chelsea could opt out of their obligation to buy Sancho at the end of his season-long loan.

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea have a clause in their loan deal for the United winger and could pay the Red Devils a £5m fee to opt out of their obligation to buy him.

The Blues needed to finish at least 14th in the Premier League this season for their obligation to buy Sancho, but the Blues could still scupper a permanent move.

Sancho’s relationship under former United manager Erik ten Hag fractured and Ruben Amorim could see the ex-England star return to Old Trafford this summer.

Why Jadon Sancho does not fit Ruben Amorim and why Man Utd boss must take a page out of Erik ten Hag’s playbook

Jadon Sancho spent the second half of last season out on loan at former club Borussia Dortmund after Ten Hag axed him from the United first-team squad.

Ten Hag criticised Sancho’s work ethic in United training in 2023 and the former England international hit back at the ex-United and Ajax boss on social media.

Sancho had a largely uneventful second spell at Dortmund and he was shipped back to Old Trafford after the end of his six-month loan at the German club.

The Chelsea player took part in United’s pre-season tour last summer under Ten Hag, but it was clear that he was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

Sancho’s attitude under former United manager Ten Hag is a clear sign that Amorim should avoid at all costs in giving him another chance at the Premier League club.

That’s not to mention that Amorim’s tactical system at United leaves Sancho with very little to offer the former Sporting CP boss in terms of value in the squad.
