Newcastle United handed big Bruno Guimaraes boost amid Sandro Tonali fatigue fear

Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti gives advice to Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean

Newcastle United's players will return to Tyneside after an exhausting couple of weeks. The Carabao Cup build-up, match, celebrations and then the aftermath have meant it's been a manic fortnight for the club.

As the dust settles on the history-making achievements, Eddie Howe's attention has already turned to focusing on a push for Champions League qualification.

With Newcastle having bowed out of the FA Cup against Brighton, it means the squad gets an extra few days to rest and prepare for the visit of Brentford on Wednesday, April 2. This weekend is FA Cup quarter-finals, and instead of aiming for a return trip to Wembley, United will be enjoying the Town Moor celebrations.

Before then, however, a number of international matches must be played this week. The Magpies have a host of players away on duty with their country.

Anthony Gordon's withdrawal from the England squad due to a hip injury is a blow for Howe, although he is suspended for the Brentford game after being handed a three-game ban for his red card against Brighton. The winger will be assessed by Newcastle's medical staff on his return to the Benton training ground.

If his injury isn't too bad - Thomas Tuchel revealed there was heavy bruising to the hip area - he could come back into contention for the trip to Leicester City on Monday, April 7.

Dan Burn will be hoping to build on his England debut when they host Latvia in a World Cup qualifier tonight, though Marc Guehi could be recalled at his expense. United's third Three Lion, Tino Livramento, didn't get off the bench against Albania and has been axed from the 23-man named squad for this evening's game. That at least means Howe won't be sweating on another player getting injured.

Brazil are also in action this week. However, Bruno Guimaraes won't be part of the starting line-up after picking up a yellow card against Colombia on Friday.

It was his fourth booking of the campaign. That rules him out of the huge clash against Argentina in the early hours of Wednesday. While it's a blow for the midfielder, Howe will no doubt be secretly happy given the importance of his skipper to his plans.

Guimaraes has played more minutes for Newcastle than anyone apart from Dan Burn this season, with more than 3,000 minutes under his belt. Missing the match means he will be rested up and hopefully injury free ahead of the Brentford game.

After the game, Guimaraes took to social media to write: "Thank you Brasilia for your support. It sure made a difference for us. We follow for more. Sad to be out of the next game but for sure I will be a fan of our national team."

Joelinton could replace his pal in the Brazil starting line-up. The powerhouse midfielder was a 28th-minute substitute for Gerson on Friday.

Sandro Tonali, meanwhile, played the first 68 minutes of Italy's Nations League quarter-final second leg against Germany last night. Having scored in the first game, Tonali couldn't help Italy reach the semi-final as they drew 3-3 in Germany to bow out 5-4 on aggregate.

Tonali failed to have much of an impact with some media reports claiming he looked 'fatigued'. Calciomercato, in their player ratings, claimed: “He is never seen, after the splendid performance in the first leg not only does he not repeat but he never enters the game, probably also due to tiredness.”

Former Everton striker Moise Kean - who has been linked with a £43m move to Newcastle - scored twice for Italy. The 25-year-old, who left Juventus for Fiorentina in a £25million summer switch, has been watched by the Magpies this term and has set Italian football on fire with 21 goals this term in all competitions.
