A fiercely competitive midfielder during his playing days for Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, Keane has built a reputation as one of the most outspoken pundits in football. And his views are valid, his illustrious career reaping seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League during his 12 years at Old Trafford.
He has also spent time in management, leading Sunderland to the Premier League in 2006/07, ad was also assistant to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa briefly in 2014. It was a role he reprised alongside Martin O'Neil at Nottingham Forest in 2019.
However, away from the football pitch, the 53-year-old Irishman has revealed a softer side in retirement, occasionally offering glimpses into his family life on social media.
Keane has been married to his wife Theresa Doyle for 28 years, after the couple met in 1992 during his time with Nottingham Forest. Although Theresa rarely appears in public alongside her husband, he has described her as "beautiful, brilliant [and] a rock in my life", and together they have five children - Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah, and Alanna - as well as two grandchildren, reports Wales Online.
Their second-eldest child, Caragh, was recently in the spotlight attention for sharing her arduous health struggles. Diagnosed with an incurable condition that made her fear her "life was over", she has been battling lupus since 2021, which caused her immense joint pain, alopecia and painful blisters.
The autoimmune condition led to extreme fatigue, forcing her to put her teaching aspirations on hold as she faced the possibility of undergoing chemotherapy or taking immunosuppressants for life. However, at 29, Caragh has managed to alleviate her symptoms significantly by altering her diet, inspiring her to establish the award-winning company Superkeen Foods, aimed at supporting others with the condition.
Recalling her "darkest times" when she thought there was "no way out of this", Caragh expressed her gratitude towards her parents for their unwavering support. She praised her "incredible" father for providing invaluable guidance, saying he "helped [her] so much".
Caragh told PA Real Life: "My mum firmly believes in the body's ability to heal itself... and even during my health flare-ups, she helps me regain perspective."
She added: "My dad is incredible as well. He's the best person for advice and I think he's helped me so much. I feel really lucky to have them."
Leah Keane, another of Keane's daughters, has been making headlines recently after getting engaged to Southampton and England defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The couple, who have reportedly been together for the past five years, have kept a low profile but announced at the end of last year that Harwood-Bellis, a product of the Manchester City academy, proposed during the summer.
Harwood-Bellis, who has been the subject of transfer speculation with West Ham and Crystal Palace showing interest, had an outstanding 2024. Not only did he get engaged and help Southampton win promotion to the Premier League, but he also scored on his England debut in November – all while his future father-in-law provided commentary from the ITV punditry box.
Despite the goal being against the Republic of Ireland, Keane expressed mixed emotions but humorously gave his unique endorsement to his daughter's relationship. He quipped that the goal was "bittersweet" for him, and with the engagement "not done and dusted yet" he remarked: "Over the last few months he's definitely been a goal threat playing for Southampton, it's nice for him.
"It's great for him to make his debut, as I said he's a bit of a goal threat. He's a nice kid, his family has done a great job."
