The Patriots aren’t lacking linebacker depth.
Last week, Christian Elliss signed a 2-year offer sheet with the Las Vegas Raiders. On Monday, the Patriots matched the offer and signed the young linebacker to a 2-year contract, according to ESPN.
Elliss, 26, had a career-high 80 tackles with the Patriots last season. He came to New England in 2023, where he primarily played special teams. He still contributed to that area in 2024 but also showcased unique athleticism for the linebacker position. Elliss also made eight special teams tackles last season.
A restricted free agent, the Patriots tendered Elliss for $3.263 million at the right of first refusal level. That meant the team had the right to match any offer the linebacker signed. Had the Patriots declined to match the Raiders offer, they would’ve lost Elliss for no compensation. Instead, the team matched the contract, reportedly worth $4.842 in 2025.
The Raiders were interested in Elliss after they lost their starting linebacker Robert Spillane, who signed with the Patriots in free agency. Now, Vrabel’s defense moves forward with ample linebacker depth.
The Patriots have newcomers Spillane and Jack Gibbens along with Elliss, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jahlani Tavai, and Monty Rice at the position.
At 6-foot-2, 231 pounds, Elliss fits what Vrabel looks for in a linebacker. The Patriots new defensive scheme will feature lighter and more athletic linebackers than it did in the past. It remains to be seen how Tavai and Bentley fit into the scheme.
