The Islamic Republic’s judicial authorities have arrested several citizens for anti-government chants at tourist sites in Fars Province during Persian New Year celebrations.

According to Mizan news agency, which is affiliated with the judiciary, Fars Province Prosecutor Kamran Mirhaji announced the arrests on charges of “insulting sacred values, disturbing public order, and failing to observe Islamic principles.”

The exact number of detainees and specific details of the charges were not disclosed.

The Shiraz prosecutor stated that arrests are ongoing and that investigations continue to identify additional protesters.

He warned that the detainees would face “decisive judicial action.”

Meanwhile, the governor of Mashhad previously announced that legal cases had been opened against 15 citizens who chanted protest slogans at Ferdowsi’s tomb during the New Year celebration.

They have been referred to judicial authorities after being identified by law enforcement.

Public spaces and ceremonial events have increasingly become sites of protest against the Islamic Republic in recent years, with security forces responding through heightened enforcement actions.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Rules Out Direct US Talks Without Major Changes

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that direct negotiations with the United States are currently impossible without fundamental changes

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that direct negotiations with the United States are currently impossible without fundamental changes.

Araghchi discussed Iran’s position on the JCPOA nuclear agreement and the possibility of indirect negotiations.

“We are prepared for war but do not seek it,” said Araghchi, adding that Iran “has tried negotiations with America many times,” with the JCPOA being one example.

He clarified that revival talks during both the Rouhani and Raisi administrations were conducted indirectly.

Araghchi stated that “the JCPOA, in its current form and text, is not revivable,” though he considers it “a basis and model for negotiations.”

He said the core principle - Iran providing nuclear assurances in exchange for sanctions relief - remains valid.

“Negotiations with America are not possible under current conditions,” Araghchi added. “A series of things must change” before talks can happen.

The comments follow previous statements by senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who described negotiations with the United States as “not wise.”

A court in Iran has sentenced Kobra Taherkhani, a school principal and teachers’ union activist from Qazvin, to three years in prison on political charges.

Branch Two of the Qazvin Revolutionary Court convicted Taherkhani of “insulting Khamenei” and “propaganda against the Islamic Republic” based on content she shared on her Instagram account and a report filed by the Qazvin IRGC Intelligence Organization.

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a three-year travel ban on Taherkhani.

She was arrested at her home in December 2024 by IRGC Intelligence agents and has been in custody since then, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
