Many people wanted Eddie Howe to be England manager, but he is now a trophy winner with Newcastle United.
The Magpies were able to hold on to Eddie Howe in 2024, despite the Newcastle United manager being heavily linked with replacing Gareth Southgate as England boss.
In the end, the FA appointed Thomas Tuchel as Southgate’s successor. He started his reign with a 2-0 win over Albania, with Dan Burn making his England debut.
Toon fans will be absolutely delighted that Howe did not get the England job, but former Everton manager Sean Dyche is still stunned that the 47-year-old was not even interviewed for the role.

Sean Dyche Shocked by Eddie Howe’s England snub
During an appearance on TalkSPORT, Dyche spoke about English managers before turning his attention to Howe.
He became the first English manager to win a major domestic trophy since Harry Redknapp in 2008 when Newcastle lifted the Carabao Cup, yet was not spoken to by the FA about taking charge of the national team.
“Eddie [Howe] didn’t even have an interview for the England job,” Dyche said.
“People go ‘yeah but he wouldn’t have took it’. That’s not the point.

“Get him in the system. Interview him now. Get him in the chain already. It might not be for him for now, for his reasons. But imagine in a year and a half and he’s feeling different. You’ve already met him and shown him the framework of English football. Give him an insight.”
Toon legend Eddie Howe could receive Newcastle United pay rise
It was reported that Howe did not want to leave Newcastle, but it is still shocking to think that the FA did not even approach the best English coach around.
But England’s loss is Newcastle United’s gain. While Tuchel gets used to his new role, Howe is getting used to being a Newcastle United legend.
He is the man who ended the Magpies’ trophy drought. He was obsessed with bringing silverware back to St James’ Park, and he has done it. That is why Alan Shearer thinks Howe will get a statue in the future.
In the meantime, Howe’s next focus will be qualifying for the Champions League.
That will open up even more doors for the Magpies, as they prepare for what could be a very busy summer. Being in the Champions League makes Newcastle United much more appealing, while it will mean that Paul Mitchell has more money to spend.
It would also mean that the Newcastle United manager receives a pay rise. If Newcastle qualify for the Champions League, Howe’s salary will rise from £6million-a-year to £9million-a-year.
