The path has been cleared for Manchester United to accelerate their interest in Victor Osimhen after Paris Saint-Germain pulled out of the race, according to reports. Osimhen is on his way out of Napoli permanently in the summer transfer window after spending this season on loan at Galatasaray, and United are said to be in the frame.
Ruben Amorim has reportedly prioritised a new striker in his first summer at the helm after a toothless attacking campaign that has contributed to the club's struggles. Rasmus Hojlund is United's only senior striker, which has fast-tracked Chido Obi's promotion after joining from Arsenal's academy last summer. Erik ten Hag splashed £36.5million to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in the same window, but Amorim prefers the Dutchman in attacking midfield, leaving him short of goalscorers.
Osimhen appeared destined for a permanent Napoli exit before the season, but that didn't come to fruition, and he completed a surprise switch to Turkey.
The 26-year-old has continued his prolific goalscoring exploits at Galatasaray, contributing to over 41 per cent of the club's goals this term with 26 strikes and five assists in 30 appearances.
His unstoppable form has sparked suggestions that PSG could return to the table this summer after missing out on his signature last year.
The Ligue 1 champions reportedly offered in the region of £167m in a combined deal for Osimhen and Napoli team-mate Kvicha Kvaratskhelia but failed to strike an agreement.
Kvaratskhelia landed at the Parc des Princes for £59m in January, but it appears like Osimhen won't be reuniting with him.
According to Sky Sport, PSG manager Luis Enrique isn't convinced by the Nigeria international and has gained an increased influence over sporting decisions at the club.
Osimhen's release clause is worth £63m for overseas clubs, and it's claimed that Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has made it clear that they will accept the most attractive offer.
The report adds that United have closely monitored the superstar striker for years and could be about to take advantage of PSG bowing out.
United have already been linked with an array of goalscorers ahead of the summer, including Viktor Gyokeres, Jonathan David, Hugo Ekitike and Liam Delap.
More versatile attackers such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have also been touted as potential targets.
The Red Devils' pull power could rely on whether they qualify for Champions League football by lifting the Europa League in May.
Chelsea joined PSG in attempting to sign Osimhen last summer and could return to the race, with Enzo Maresca also eyeing attacking reinforcements.
