Danilo Opens Up About Mental Struggles at Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid defender Danilo has opened up about the mental challenges he faced during his time at the Bernabéu, revealing that the immense pressure led him to seek psychological support. In a candid interview with The Guardian, the Brazilian right-back described how the scrutiny at the world’s most prestigious club deeply affected his confidence and well-being.

“Real Madrid was the climax of this problem because it’s the biggest club in the world. I suffered so much that I had to seek psychological help. There were times when it seemed like I no longer remembered how to play football,” Danilo admitted.

The criticism he faced, both from the media and on social platforms, took a toll on his mental health. “The criticism hurt me so much. I was completely caught up in it, on social media, on everything. That’s when I started working with a sports psychologist,” he added.

Danilo credited his former teammate Lucas Silva, who also experienced the weight of expectations at Real Madrid, for recommending professional support. The decision to seek help played a crucial role in regaining his composure and rediscovering his confidence on the pitch.

After winning back-to-back Champions League titles with Real Madrid, Danilo made a move to Manchester City in 2017. Under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, Danilo says he found not only a new team but also a renewed perspective on the game.

“Pep Guardiola educates his players. That’s the most important part of his job. He makes all players think about football the same way: time, space, movement, possession, taking care of the ball,” Danilo said.

The transformative experience with Guardiola was likened to an academic journey. “Guardiola instilled in me a good dose of respect, but in a good way. It was like being at university. What I experienced with him allowed me to raise my level and maintain it to this day.

“It’s not that I was an idiot before arriving at Manchester City, but I realized that I played football completely wrong. If I had known him (Pep) earlier, it would have made my life much easier.”
