Former NFL player, Super Bowl champion reads to kids at King Elementary

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A former NFL player and Super Bowl champion is showing JCPS students the importance of reading.

Malcolm Mitchell was a member of the Super Bowl champion 2016 New England Patriots, but now he’s a literacy advocate, author and motivational speaker.

He talked to students at King Elementary on Vermont Avenue Monday morning. Kids learned about the power of reading and watched a magician perform a magic show. Mitchell then read them his book “The Magician’s Hat.”

“I think reading is one of the most foundational tools for being productive as a human being,” Mitchell said. “I did not always believe that. I grew up under the assumption that football was the most important thing in the world and, along the way, I learned better. Now I try to tell students ‘be an athlete, but you still need to be a reader.’ It will take you further in life.”

Mitchell amassed over 2,400 yards and 16 touchdowns in his four-year college career at the University of Georgia. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft to the Patriots. He caught 32 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns in his single season with New England and earned a Super Bowl ring.
