'The great pity was': Roberto Martinez names the only regret from his Everton tenure

Roberto Martinez had a mixed tenure with Everton but certainly didn’t fail at Goodison Park.

Martinez has gone from a three-season spell with Everton to now coaching Cristiano Ronaldo with Portugal, which is some contrast.

But Martinez did a good enough job at the Toffees and certainly didn’t fail following David Moyes’ first spell.

It seemed like the only person who could emulate Moyes is Moyes himself but that doesn’t tarnish the Spaniard’s reputation at the club.

However, Martinez has spoken out and claimed what was his only regret which Everton fans will agree with.

Roberto Martinez names his only regret from his time with Everton

He did some brilliant things at the club as Martinez signed ‘the brain’ in Gareth Barry, who was an astute piece of business.

Martinez also managed a fifth-place finish in his first season which certainly set up a solid platform for the Spaniard.

It seemed to go wrong for some reason though, and Martinez even lost the respect of Sylvain Distin, who was a mainstay in the team at the time.

Speaking to the Coaches Voice, Martinez detailed his time and explained his only regret from his time on Merseyside.

“I always thought Everton should fight for trophies, but the last time the club had won was the FA Cup in 1995,” Martinez said.

“We reached two semi-finals in 2016, in the League Cup and the FA Cup. In the League Cup, we lost the second leg to Manchester City 3-1 after winning 2-1 at home, and in the FA Cup, we lost 2-1 at Wembley to Manchester United.

“Despite that, I have great memories of those three years at Everton. The great pity was not being able to finish the project with a trophy, because I firmly believe that Everton and their fans deserved it.”

Martinez was the best manager of the post-Moyes era at Everton

It’s not much of a controversial claim to say Martinez was the best Everton had between Moyes, and, well, Moyes again.

The Spaniard almost guided Everton to Champions League football at his first attempt and almost gave the Toffees a cup final.

Of course, this is a matter of ‘almost’, which proves why he regrets not winning something with a squad that had the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley, and John Stones.

Carlo Ancelotti might have a shout, but the Italian didn’t stay long enough at Everton, so Martinez deserves that crown.

Although Martinez had some transfer howlers with Everton, he had a respectable stint with the club.
