Pedri hits back at Martinez critics and tells Szczesny to stay

Barcelona midfielder Pedri has defended Inigo Martinez after the defender came in for criticism for pulling out of the Spain squad.

Martinez withdrew due to a knee injury, prompting criticism from some quarters, which Pedri says shows a lack of respect.

“I think it’s disrespectful to have criticism. When a player gets injured, that kind of thing always comes out,” he told the media.

“It’s disrespectful to say he’s jumping ship. Every player wants to be part of the national team, and it’s a dream for every athlete. Íñigo is a professional on and off the field.”

The midfielder also called on Wojciech Szczesny to extend his contract at the club and hailed his best qualities.

“I would like Szczesny to renew his contract. I like him a lot. He’s a very funny guy who handles pressure,” he told the media.

“He’s a professional, he’s given us a lot and he’s put in some spectacular performances. I would like him to stay. I’m having fun on and off the pitch.”

Szczesny is expected to stay on for another year and is believed to be close to reaching an agreement with Barca.
