TOLEDO, Ohio - A total of 42 scouts and team representatives from 30 NFL teams were on hand to watch recent graduates of the Toledo football team run drills at the annual Pro Day at the Fetterman Training Center on the campus of The University of Toledo on Monday.
Eleven players from last season's team participated in the 40-year dash, the vertical jump and other drills under the watchful eyes of NFL reps. Joining those 10 were a select group of invitees from other schools.
Defensive tackle Darius Alexander, who is projected as a high draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, did not work out but was on hand to cheer on his teammates. Alexander said he chose not to work out as he was satisfied with his performance at last month's NFL Scouting Combine. He ran a 4.95 in the 40 at the Combine, the fifth-best time for all interior linemen. He also tied for the most bench reps with 28 and was in the top 10 in every category.
"It was awesome to just come out and watch my brothers compete and talk to some of the coaches," said Alexander, a two-time All-MAC player. "More than anything, I just wanted to come out and see my brothers have some fun, and see them show off their skills and talents."
Wide receiver Jerjuan Newton said that Pro Day provided a great opportunity to make his case to NFL scouts.
"I just wanted to come out and showcase my talent to the scouts, and show up for the University of Toledo and for myself," said Newton, a three-time All-MAC selection who caught 206 passes in his college career. "They (NFL scouts) really wanted me to come out and show how fast I run. I think I did a good job of that today. Now I'll just wait for the draft and see what happens."
The 2025 NFL Draft will take place April 24-26 in the Titletown District in Green Bay, Wisc. Toledo has had 10 players selected in the NFL Draft in the past eight years, including cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, who was the 22nd pick of the first round of last year's draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Mitchell went on to be named runner-up for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year for the Super Bowl champion.
