Nico Williams is set to be hot property at the end of this season and the winger has his heart set on joining the young Spanish brigade at Barcelona, claims a report in Spanish outlet El Nacional.
Williams has caught everyone’s attention in the previous year and this summer, he is finally set to leave Athletic Club and look for a new challenge. While a move to the Premier League has been highly discussed, at the moment, Barcelona are very much the favourites.
However, Nico Williams has made it clear that he does not want to create unnecessary drama regarding his long-term future and his representatives have informed Barcelona that they will need to trigger his €58 million release clause at the start of the summer transfer window. If Barcelona do not move quickly, the Spanish international will explore alternatives.
Will Arsenal be able to get their hands on Nico Williams?
After Barcelona, Arsenal are said to be the likeliest destination for the left-winger and they will happily pay €58 million for such an exciting talent.
Williams will be the ideal upgrade to Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard down that left wing but we don’t think Mikel Arteta will not have the luxury to work with the youngster.
Williams has talked about a deadline only so that Barcelona do not get complacent and the 22-year-old very clearly wants to play with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pedri.
Yes, Barca are struggling with finances but they are planning to sell several players – including big ones like Christensen, Araujo and Ferran Torres – so in the end, they will have enough money to trigger the Bilbao winger’s release clause.
Another reason why Arsenal won’t be able to sign Nico Williams is because Bayern Munich have also been linked with the winger and if wage isn’t a problem, the winger will prefer a move to Germany instead of playing in North London. Arsenal are a very strong side but at Bayern, Nico Williams will be guaranteed silverware.
The Gunners have also been linked with several other wingers including Leroy Sane, Lookman and Yoane Wissa and if they miss out on Nico Williams, Arteta will shift his attention to one of them.
In all honesty, the left-wing is not a very problematic area for Arsenal so even if they cannot find a worthy signing, Mikel Arteta won’t mind using Martinelli and Trossard for one more season.
