Branthwaite captains England U21 to victory - amid transfer speculation

The Cumbrian defender was named skipper for the Young Lions' latest game.

Tt was a successful night for the Wigton star and his team-mates who claimed a 4-2 victory at The Hawthorns as Branthwaite, 22, came into the side having been a substitute in the previous game against France.

The game saw Everton's Branthwaite win his eighth Under-21 cap.

The Cumbrian played the first 62 minutes before being substituted as head coach Lee Carsley made a number of changes.

Goals from Hayden Hackney, Ethan Nwaneri, Omari Hutchinson and Jaden Philogene saw England to the win.

Branthwaite's latest Under-21 outing came after he was left out of Thomas Tuchel's senior Three Lions squad for games against Albania and Latvia.

And on Monday night it was accompanied by renewed speculation over the former Carlisle United man's future at Goodison Park.

Sky Sports reported that the defender is "expected to further consider his Everton future" after his omission from the full England squad.

Manchester United have long been linked with the Cumbrian, while Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested.

Carlisle would stand to benefit significantly from a big-money move involving Branthwaite, through a sell-on clause in the deal that took him from Brunton Park to Everton in January 2020.

The defender's agent is the former Blues captain and striker David Reeves.

Branthwaite's fellow Cumbrians Dean Henderson and James Trafford were again on the bench for the England senior side's 3-0 win over Latvia at Wembley.

Tuchel again opted for Jordan Pickford in goal, with Whitehaven's Henderson and Greysouthen's Trafford next in line after Aaron Ramsdale was released from the squad after last Friday's win over Albania.

Goals from Reece James, Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze earned Tuchel his second victory in his second game at the helm.
