Man Utd could use the free agent market to their advantage in the summer window

Ruben Amorim could look to make the most of the free agent market this summer as he looks to mould the Manchester United team into his vision ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

United will most likely go for a mixture of both youth and experience in the window as Amorim tries to recruit players he can harness into world superstars while also having the right characters in the dressing room to aid his team’s push back up the league for the here and now.

The Red Devils have spent big on recruitment players in recent transfer windows with mixed success and their current financial fair play position along with the possibility of no European football will mean that Amorim will have to be frugal with his resources this summer while giving the team the desired makeover.

With that in mind, we have taken a look at some of the best free agents that United could realistically target in this transfer window including a prolific 24-goal striker and a proven Premier League stalwart.

A new-look defence

Ruben Amorim is likely to be in the market for defensive reinforcements to help give the squad further quality next season. As it stands, Lisandro Martinez is expected to miss a huge chunk of next season through injury while both Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are likely to depart at the end of their current deals.

At centre-back, United could look to target German international Jonathan Tah. The 29-year-old is approaching the final few months of his Bayer Leverkusen contract and has experienced a Bundesliga title win, an invincible season and a run to the Europa League final.

Another option could be Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar. The former Swiss international is 33-years-old but remains a fine defender, racking up 32 appearances this term while helping his team to their first piece of domestic silverware in 70 years.

Meanwhile, at right-back a player that would perfectly fit Amorim’s system would be Nottingham Forest star Ola Aina, who has enjoyed a career best season at the City Ground to leave the club on the brink of Champions League qualification for the first time since 1981.

The return of an academy wonderkid

United are expected to wave goodbye to Christian Eriksen as he approaches the final months of his contract while Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo have both also been linked with moves away.

The Red Devils are expected to be in the market for a defensive midfielder with composure on the ball and could turn to one that left the club five years ago in Angel Gomes.

The 24-year-old recently earned his England debut and now has four caps for the Three Lions after an impressive spell at Lille. He can play all over the midfield but is also attracting interest from West Ham and Spurs.

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, a Serie A winner with Napoli two seasons ago and a 63-time Cameroon international could be another option. The 29-year-old suffered relegation with Fulham four years ago but has been a huge hit in Italy since then. Elsewhere, Marco Veratti, a former European Championship winner, could also be on the market as he approaches the final months of his contract with Al-Arabi SC in Qatar.

A 24-goal Champions League star

Both Rasmus Hoijlund and Joshua Zirkzee have had a nightmare in front of goal this season - and Amorim needs a reliable goalscorer to fire his team up the table.

Sporting CP hero Viktor Gyokeres is thought to be a target but will likely be out of the budget after his incredible season. But an affordable target that is having an equally stellar campaign could be Lille frontman Jonathan David.

The 24-year-old Canadian has hit double figures in every season of his career and is currently on a tally of 24 across all competitions this term. He is renowned for his blistering speed and his incredible movement and could prove to be a transformative addition for the Red Devils.

Other more far-fetched options include a third spell for Cristiano Ronaldo as he approaches the final months of his deal with Al-Nassr and a move for ex-Manchester City wideman Leroy Sane, who has lifted three league titles at Bayern Munich.
