How a Belgian pundit reacted to the performance of Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels vs Ukraine

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels has taken his game to a new level during the 2024/25 campaign.

Much like Chris Wood, Sels is at the stage of his career where he’d be forgiven for slowing down but that hasn’t been what he’s showcased this season.

Sels has been praised by Joe Hart during the current campaign and right now he is leading the race for the Golden Glove accolade with 12 clean sheets.

On Sunday, he was tossed the gloves ahead of Thibaut Courtois by Rudi Garcia as Belgium faced Ukraine in a big Nations League clash.

The national media raved about Sels, and it appears that he was also impressed by a regular pundit on Belgian television.

Frank Boeckx hails Forest star Matz Sels

It was a superb performance from Sels against Ukraine and it’s nice to see him get a game on the international stage and come through it unscathed.

Sels is very much the number one goalkeeper at Forest this season and with Carlos Miguel injured it would represent a problem if anything happened to the Belgian.

Boeckx was very impressed with Sels and raved about the save he made in the game to deny Artem Dovbyk a certain goal.

He told Voetbal Belgie: “In a match like that, you know that one chance will come for the opponent. It wasn’t an unstoppable ball, but he did well.

“He took no risks and pushed the ball next to his goal. A very good match by Sels.”

Matz Sels stats 2024/25

In amongst a host of top-performing players, Sels will go into the mix to be the Forest Player of the Year at the end of May.

If Forest do achieve a Champions League place it feels likely that it will be an attacking player who will claim that particular accolade but the defence has been immense too.

With Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic in front of him, Forest have cut out the silly mistakes from last season and with Sels shoring up the rearguard it’s been a successful campaign already.

Sels should find himself as the club’s number one next season too and the challenge for him is to continue gaining confidence from each passing performance.
