Celtics coach gives Jayson Tatum injury update after dangerous foul

The Celtics got a scare on Monday night when they lost Jayson Tatum to an ugly looking ankle injury in the midst of a 113-95 win over the Kings. Tatum was not made available to speak after the game per multiple reports but Joe Mazzulla did speak about Tatum’s status after he left in third quarter of Monday’s victory.

“He seems to be doing ok,” Mazzulla told reporters in Sacramento per NBC Sports Boston. “He’s just icing it right now. I didn’t see the play but they made the right call, flagrant foul. We were fortunate he was able to shoot the free throw. He’s taking care of it right now.”

When pressed about his conversation with Tatum, Mazzulla shared an encouraging detail.

“I literally just asked him how he’s doing; he said, ‘ok,’ Mazzulla said. “I know he’ll do anything and everything to make sure he just gets better.”

Tatum suffered the injury with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter. He made a 3-point shot but landed on the foot of Domantas Sabonis who was contesting the attempt. Tatum spent a significant stretch on the floor with team trainers before hobbling back to the Boston bench.

Officials reviewed the foul and upgraded it to a flagrant 1 foul on Sabonis for not giving Tatum a spot to land after his 3-point attempt. The Kings big man apologized to Tatum upon returning to the floor. The Celtics All-Star eventually attempted his two free throws for the flagrant foul after a timeout before being subbed out of the game. He did not return after heading to the locker room and finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and eight assists in 26 minutes during the win.

The Celtics have.a day off on Tuesday before facing off with the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night in a nationally televised matchup.

Boston will release an injury report on Tuesday afternoon for Wednesday’s matchup.
