The latest Manchester United injury list and expected return dates after the international break

Manchester United are one week away from returning to Premier League action, but their injury crisis shows few signs of clearing up and Ruben Amorim faces a nervous wait to find out whether all of his remaining players return from international duty in one piece.

That hasn’t been the case for next Tuesday’s opponents, Nottingham Forest, who are anxiously awaiting news of Chris Wood’s fitness after the striker suffered an injury while playing for New Zealand, but Forest’s injury concerns pale when compared with United’s – as it stands, no fewer than 10 players are either out or known to be doubtful for the game at the City Ground.

We’ve got all of the latest updates on Amorim’s walking wounded below, including their expected return dates when available and their status ahead of the match against the Premier League’s surprise package.

Ayden Heaven and Harry Maguire among defenders who could return

United’s biggest fitness concerns have centred on their defence, with no fewer than six first-team defenders out for their last league game, a routine 3-0 win over Leicester City, while youngster Ayden Heaven had to be taken off after picking up a knock during the match itself.

Heaven was spotted wearing a protective boot as he left the stadium after the win over Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side but was walking under his own steam, and the Manchester Evening News have reported that the former Arsenal defender is now out of the boot and has some chance of being available to face Forest.

He may not be needed, however, with both Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro closing in on returns. Both missed the game against Leicester, Yoro with an ankle injury and Maguire with an unknown issue, but neither problem is believed to be long-term and they should both be in training ahead of next Tuesday’s game.

Amorim will also be able to call upon Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu again following the completion of his three-match domestic suspension for a red card he picked up against Ipswich Town. Recent promising performances, in particular against Real Sociedad, mean that his return should be a welcome one.

Long-term injuries still hurting Manchester United

While there could well be some good news with defenders making their way back for the Forest match, plenty of players are still out for the long run with at least two out for the season.

Centre-half Lisandro Martínez (ACL) and winger Amad Diallo (ankle) will both miss the rest of the season, with Martínez potentially out for the entirety of 2025. There is some positivity, at least, over fellow long-term absentee Luke Shaw, with Amorim suggesting that he was likely to return from persistent leg injuries before the end of the season. The Forest match will almost certainly come too soon, however.

There is also doubt over the status of Kobbie Mainoo, who has now missed the last five consecutive league matches with an unspecified injury. Amorim has refused to provide details of the problem, saying only that he would be out for “a few weeks”. That extremely vague timeline hints that he could be back for the Forest game, but there has been no confirmation of any kind. Mason Mount, who made the bench against Leicester, should be available.

There is also a distinct lack of clarity surrounding the likely return date of Jonny Evans, who has reported pain in his lower back, and back-up goalkeepers Altay Bayinidir and Tom Heaton, who have been absent without a reason being supplied for recent games. There is no information available as to when any of those three players could be back in the match day squad.
