On March 25th, commencing at 6:00 PM(JST) Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting for approximately 20 minutes with Dr. Fatih BIROL, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) during his visit to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that the IEA is the most authoritative international organization in the field of energy and commended Executive Director Birol's leadership in the energy sector, referring to the IEA's contributions to the G7 Hiroshima Summit two years ago. Minister Iwaya expressed his hope that this visit would serve as an opportunity to strengthen relationship between Japan and the IEA.
Minister Iwaya also stated that IEA’s core mission is securing the energy security and Japan attaches importance on the IEA's functions. In response, Executive Director Birol, noting that the energy security is the top priority for the IEA, expressed his gratitude for Japan's contributions to the IEA, and his expectation for further strengthening the cooperative relationship between Japan and the IEA.
Finally, both sides confirmed their commitment to continued cooperation to ensure energy security.
