Jonathan David has been on Manchester United’s radar for years and the Canadian striker could be available for free this summer.
Although Manchester United have scored seven goals in the las two matches, beating Real Sociedad 4-1 win and Leicester City 3-0, there is no denying that the team has struggled in front of goal.
Rasmus Hojlund ended a 21-match goal drought against Leicester and he scored another goal against Portugal during the international break.
Ruben Amorim will hope Hojlund can build momentum but that won’t change anything when it comes to United’s search for a new striker this summer.
To make matters more challenging for United’s head coach, his squad is lacking in the striker department. Joshua Zirkzee looks better as a number 10 and Chido Obi has made just four appearances for United’s first team since joining the club’s academy in October 2024.

Jonathan David pushing for a big summer move
As we get closer to the transfer window, United will be linked with more strikers but the Jonathan David rumours are going nowhere anytime soon.
The latest United target to emerge is Hugo Ekitike but it is understood that Eintracht Frankfurt will want around £67 million and Ineos may look for some bargain deals instead.
It was reported in January that United were interested in signing David on a Bosman this summer.
More United News
Just last week, David told Gary Neville that he would love to play in La Liga having grown up loving Spanish football.
However, it remains to be seen if one of the Spanish clubs will make David’s dream a reality.
Further reports in France suggest United are among Premier League clubs actively pursuing a deal for the 25-year-old goalscorer.
A new interview with David has emerged and he suggests that he wants to play at the “very highest level” ahead of the summer transfer window.
“Obviously, with this summer going on, I am not sure if I am staying or going,” David told Golazo America (as quoted by The Mirror) after scoring and providing an assist for Canada in a 2-1 win over the United States on Sunday.
“But if I do end up going, I have to push myself at the very highest level.
“When you play for a big club, your position [in the team] is never guaranteed and you need to fight.
“I am never guaranteed anywhere I go to start every game and play every game, I have to perform. I am willing to fight. I know it’s an important year.
“It’s a big decision. I will make a wise decision.”
These comments will be encouraging for any of David’s potential suitors because it shows he understands what will be required if and when he joins a bigger club.
Jonathan David stats
David appears ready to make a step up in his career after scoring 107 goals in 224 games across all competitions for Lille.
That includes 23 this season with several more games to come.
Eden Hazard, Victor Osimhen, Rafael Leao, Gabriel Magalhaes and Dimitri Payet all left Lille in the past and went on to better things. David will believe he can achieve that and follow in their footsteps.

Jonathan David record for Gent and Lille
Of course, this means there could be a potential reunion on the cards since Leny Yoro joined United from Lille last year.
Only time will tell if David and Yoro become teammates again.
